B.S Computer Science Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science Computer Science studies how digital computers are used to process information effectively. Computer science majors emphasize software aspects of theory and application rather than the hardware aspects (electronic computer architecture). Two computer science majors are offered. (Other computer-related degree programs are also available i.e., Computer Engineering and Computer Information Systems in Business). Students should complete 55-60 cr. hrs. at Sunway College toward the 122 cr. hrs. required for the B.S. degree. The remainder of the study program is pursued in the United States where truly outstanding computer facilities (with a wide variety of computing platforms including parallel-processing supercomputer), instruction (Ph.D. computer scientists), and library facilities (computer indexed) are offered. The Computer Science Theory & Analysis Major is externally accredited by the premier accreditation body, the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB), and is the top computer science major offered in any U.S. university. This major is for students intending post-graduate study in computer science or computer engineering, or pursuit of high-level software development computing careers. (Requires 42 cr. hrs. of computer science, 19 cr. hrs. of mathematics, 10 cr. hrs. of physics, 6 cr. hrs. of electrical engineering, 8 cr. hrs. of additional laboratory science, and 7 cr. hrs. of communications & ethics subjects). The General Computer Science Major is a strong major that does not require as many subjects outside computer science. (Requires 36 cr. hrs. of computer science, 19 cr. hrs. of mathematics, and 3 cr. hrs. of electrical engineering.)Western Michigan University, a state supported (public, not private) university is one of North Americas top-rated young universities. 50th largest in the United States, it offers undergraduate degrees in nearly 170 areas. Among its 28,000 students are 2,000 international students who come from more than 90 countries. Western Michigan University is the #1 U.S. university for Malaysian students, according to MACEE (1989-1995). Westerns link with Malaysia extends over 25 years. Western graduates now exercise high-level leadership in government and business & industry. Few other U.S. universities have so many graduates in Malaysia. Our alumni network makes it easier for a student to launch a professional career upon return to Malaysia. Western Michigan University is JPA-recognized. Western Michigan University a World of Difference! True-Twinning provides students with guaranteed admission at Western Michigan University if they meet the minimum academic standard of the university (at least CGPA 2.0). Students are guaranteed a place in their major field of study. Students are counselled by the Resident Director from Western Michigan University. All subjects passed at Sunway College are accepted by the University. True-twinning saves time & money. In Malaysia & the U.S., 3 semesters per year are offered so that most students may complete their degree in 3.5 years after SPM. This is also a transfer program to other top U.S. universities (not guaranteed). This is a proven program, having sent more than 1,500 students to the U.S. We have 3 intakes per year. Students may begin in any intake. Studies at Sunway College include required foundation subjects for the computer science majors as well as broad, liberal education subjects required of all students pursuing an American degree. (U.S. universities all require liberal education study regardless of degree program; this is one of the key distinguishing features of U.S. higher education designed to stimulate self-reliant learning, critical thinking, and adaptability to change.) Studies to be completed at Sunway College are as follows:1. Complete 55 - 60 credit hours with an average mark of at least "C" (CGPA 2.0). 2. Complete with at least a "C" grade as many of the following as possible: BIS 102 Intro. to Information Processing 3 Math 122 Calculus I 4 CS 111 Computer Science I 4 Math 123 Calculus II 4 CS 112 Computer Science II 4 Math 145 Discrete Mathematics 3 Com 104 Public Speaking 3 (Theory & Analysis Major only) Phys 205/6 Mechanics & Heat 5 (Theory & Analysis Major only) Phys 207/8 Electricity & Light 5 (Theory & Analysis Major only) 3.
