My first bit of advice to the reader concerning this fascinating book is don't try to skim through it quickly. If you do you will miss a lesson in history. Lee Meadows has written a richly detailed novel starring Lincoln Keller, an ex-Oakland Raider/ex-police officer who has moved back home to Detroit and is now a private investigator. When a beautiful woman hires Keller to solve a 40 year old mystery he discovers that, even after all these years, there are still people willing to kill to keep the truth from being told. In the mid-50's a singing group called The Sentiments simply disappeared off the face of the earth one night, never to be heard from again. Keller delves into the history of what was the blossoming pre-Motown music industry in Detroit and the author gives us a fascinating look at what it was like to be black in that era. I'm so impressed with Lee Meadows' writing I have to share a bit of it with all of you. Here is a brief quote: "Somewhere along the way this case became like trying to catch Jello at ninety miles an hour. Invisible and messy. Now it seemed to come together with all the noise of a Wagnerian opera. The fat lady hadn't sang yet, but she waited just off stage for her cue. Most likely eating a chicken leg." With prose like that, how can you resist picking this book up? SILENT CONSPIRACY is a treat through and through. Buy it, get it from the library, borrow it from a friend, do whatever you have to do to get your hands on it! Also keep an eye out for the second Lincoln Keller mystery, SILENT SUSPICION. |
