Tim Woodsmall, Mike Sutton, Justin Scherer and Joe Curts carded a 53-56-109 to claim the Championship Flight of the Vigo Coal Four-man Scramble this weekend at the Mt. Carmel Municipal Golf Course. The defeated the team of Chase Emge, Matt Monroe, Joe Villines and Casey Hunter by two stroke. That team shot a 58-53-111.

A Flight went to Mike Dagley, Jim Dagley, Greg Stewart and Pat Stewart, who carded a 59-57-116 to nose out Jim White, Dave Crow, Jay Smith and Pete Wienart by one stroke. The second-place team shot a 59-58-117. Rick Bobbitt, Dennis Nichols, Marc Tate and Eugene Connor carded a 63-60-123 to capture B Flight. Randy Beckert, Van Hook, Steve tabor and Brian Csukas shot a 63-62-125. C Flight went to J.R. Goodson, Steve Rafferty, Mike Goodson and Mike Hoke with a 66-67-127.3. Zach Robinson, Phil Hipsher, Pat Donahue and Herb Sutter shot a 66-63-129. Fractional scores were determined on the Seven Percent Rule - no team can improve its second-day score by more than seven percent over the first days score.

We played well, said Curts, who was elected as spokesperson for the team. Had a pretty good team this year; came down here last year and didnt play too well, but this year played about as well as we can. Everytime we got a chance it seemed like somebody stepped up, made a shot and we made some putts.

Curts added that the course was in good shape. Its perfect. The greens are perfect, theyre fast. Lots of grass in the fairways, the tees are good. You couldnt ask for anything better for around this area for the summer weve had, he said. The grounds hard, but for the most part, if you hit in on the green its going to stop. Theres no bouncing it on. If you hit it in there its going to take a couple of hops and stop, just like it should, said Curts. We had help from everybody. We used everybodys tee shot sometime or another, he noted. Some scrambles require that each players tee shot be used at least once per side. That really wouldnt have made much difference because everybody on out team could hit it off the tee. We played a lot of everybodys shots, it wasnt one persons shots here all the time. It was spread out over the whole team, he said.

Curts added that Saturday most of the putts were made by Sutton and Scherer. Sunday, though it was everybody. But (Saturday) it was Mike and Justins show on the greens. I think I was putting next-to-last and putted five times. Tim was putting last and putted four, so we didnt get a chance to do much (Saturday), Curts added.
