CREDITS
WinJV reflects my personal point of view on JV-1080 sysex management. Anyway, many friends on the Net helped me in various ways. If you find this software useful you have to thank them. In particular, thanks a lot to:

INTRODUCTION
WinJV is written in Visual Basic 3.0, a good general-purpose development environment. However, the most critical tasks are performed using API calls rather than using VB3's built-in functions, to keep it as fast and compact as possible.
Midi management is performed by means of direct calls to Windows' internal multi-media functions.
Originally developed for my own use, I made WinJV available on the Net as public domain software in Feb'96. Today, WinJV is really far more powerful than I ever expected to, thanks to the suggestions and the efforts of a lot of net-friends around the world. And you know what? It's still freeware! This package may be freely copied and distributed provided you don't change the original files.
WinJV is compliant to many quality and fault-tolerance software requirement standards. Each version is subjected to a lot of tests before its actual release. However, this software is provided 'as is': I won't carry any responsibility for any damage which could occur to your equipment.

USAGE
WinJV's viewers (including the organizer) do NOT send data to your synth's permanent memory. They ALL deal with temporary memory. The only way you can modify your permanent memory is by sending something from the SysEx buffer.
WinJV's actions are triggered by means of your mouse: drag, drop, click, right-click and double click. Most functions does not have a keyboard counterpart (one exception is pressing +/- to increase/decrease a cell's value). For instance, there is a 'hidden' GOTO menu in the Patch Viewer, try a right-click on the TONES button!

A SAMPLE SESSION
Let's say you're an XP80 user and you want to listen to the patches in the Preset-E bank, which comes with the JV2080. Note: The whole bank can be either directly sent to the XP80 (by 'Send'ing the sysex buffer) or stored to disk as an XP80 bank (by right clicking the file name label in the Organizer)

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
I obviously assume that a properly working midi path is already available to your system (so that either your synth's Midi In and Midi Out ports can be conveniently accessed). Besides that, WinJV's recommended requirements are: Do you have a fast 386 with 2 megs RAM and standard VGA? Well, try and hope! I can't guarantee it works. Keep in mind that the most demanding tasks in terms of processing power are those involving Midi In (Midi downloads and Midi Thru). Try the Midi Thru option: if you hear sensible delays while playing, then your PC is likely too slow to fit. Also, have a check with windows in standard mode (win /s) rather than enhanced mode.
What about me? I run WinJV on a 486/66, with 16 megs RAM and 1024x768x256 (Large Fonts) sVga and my JV-1080 is accessed via a Sound Blaster 16 and an MPU-401. The double Midi In is very handy, it allows me to have both the master keyboard and the PC working in parallel.

INSTALLATION NOTES
No special setup procedure is required to install WinJV. Simply make a directory and put all the files in it. Now move all the *.VBX and *.DLL files to your windows\system directory (if you don't do that, you may receive warnings like "this DLL is outdated" or "that DLL is not properly initialized"). Should one or more VBX/DLL be already in your windows\system directory, keep the newest one.
