Welcome!
Biodiesel:
- is good for rural economies
- cuts our dependence on foreigin oil
- is good for the environment
So, what's the problem?
Biodiesel has been called "the fastest growing alternative fuel," but:
- there isn't an adequate fueling infrastructure.
- most people look at you like you have three heads if you mention the fuel or tell them they can run diesel engines on vegetable oil.
- it receives crumbs in the proposed energy bill, while the oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear power industries get handed billions of dollars.
- the most promising biodiesel governmental research program -- for a energy solution that could be implemented now -- was ended, while money is being thrown at hydrogen -- an energy solution that is years away, at best.
- in Cheney's 2001 energy report, it was stated ethanol could play a part in ending our dependence on foreign fuels -- if enough could be produced. The same could be said about biodiesel, but Bush cancelled the most promising program for wider acceptance of the fuel.
Also:
- there are diesel-propelled automobiles in Europe that get in the range of 80-95 m.p.g., but many states won't allow you to purchase a new diesel -- if they allow it at all.
- your petrol dollars are being sent to rulers of despotic countries who live in opulent splendor while their citizens live in squalor.
- the United States has the largest problem with obesity in the world, but people worry that growing biodiesel feed stocks will impact our food supply.
