6/10. This movie was about the main character, Tom, and how he gets sold from Slave owner to Slave Owner. In the beginning, another character named Christopher, adores Tom and loves having him around. Tom is a huge help on the farm, but his slave owner decided to sell Tom to get some much needed money. Christopher's heart is broken as Tom gets wheeled away.
The slave trader boards the ship with Tom, and they sail away, where Tom meets a little girl named Eva. Eva accidently falls overboard, and Tom chases in after her. He grabs her and the steam boat people pick them up. Eva's dad buys Tom, and Tom is quite happy. Though after a while, good things always have to end because Eva gets sick and dies. Though her father promises to set Tom free, Augustine, Eva's father, gets stabbed, and dies before he can sign the papers. Once again, Tom is sold at an auction and a horrible Slave Owner, Simon Lagree, buys him.
I might have given this movie a better rating if I didn't see the movie on 3 different days, and had to write notes down about it. It was an interesting tale that probably reflected how some slaves were treated. The first 2 slave owners treated their slaves nicely, but Simon treated them horribly.
The acting was great. Avery Brooks, I think that's who played Tom in the movie that I saw, did a great job. He made me really believe that he was this really great guy. The person who played Simon Lagree did a ok job. He was "drunk" most of the time, so we couldn't really develop on his character much.
All in all, it was a good movie. There wasn't anything that was truly objectionable, and you didn't see anyone bleed that much, just 1 instance at the end.
