As a child, Tobey Maguire dreamt of being a chef, but was bribed by his mother to sign up for a drama class instead of home economics. By his early teens he had already appeared in commercials and on several TV shows, and in '93 made his film debut in the drama "This Boy's Life," starring long-time pal Leonardo DiCaprio. Maguire broke out in '97 with two high-profile roles in "Deconstructing Harry" and "The Ice Storm." After receiving critical acclaim in 1999 for his work in "The Cider House Rules," Maguire's career accelerated and the superstar snagged a role as a superhero in the comic book inspired flick "Spiderman." Maguire had a bit part in the film "Empire Records," but it was cut. However, they failed to take his name out of the credits!
