1.5/10. The Phantom is the very cliched tale of a rich New Yorker Xander Drax (Treat Williams) in his quest to capture the 3 skulls that would give him power to create chaos in the world ("There is opprotunity in chaos"). The Phantom (Billy Zane) is out to stop him.
The opening is an Indiana Jones-esque capture with some henchmen trying to steal one of the skulls for Drax when the phantom goes out to try to save the day. This starts off all the "action" and "plot" of the film.
There isn't much good I can say about this movie, so I'll start with the bad. I don't see why any company would spend this $45 million creating and writing a movie that has been seen many times before (namely Indiana Jones). Practically every line and scene is clichd and rather unbelievable (such as a horse outrunning an airplane).
The film has some minor saving graces. Williams turns in his typical top-notch performance. The only other non-Razzieworthy performance is by one of Treat's henchmen (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who is decidely adequate. The film is actually somewhat entertaining because it is so horrible.
Overall, The Phantom is a terrible, poorly written waste of time.
Rated PG for action/adventure violence and some mild language.
Running time: 100 minutes
