8/10. In 1950's mining town called Coalwood, Homer Hickam is a kid with only one future in sight, to work in the local coalmine like his father. However in October 1957, everything changes when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik goes into orbit. With that event, Homer becomes inspired to learn how to build rockets. With his friends and the local nerd, Homer sets to do just that by trial and a lot of error. Unfortunately, most of the town and especially Homer's father thinks that they are wasting their time. Only one teacher in the high school understands their efforts and lets them know that they could become contenders in the national science fair with college scholarships being the prize. Now the gang must learn to perfect their craft and overcome the many problems facing them as they shoot for the stars.
Man, what a great movie. I remember seeing this a couple of years ago, and didn't understand one bit of it, then I saw recently, and it all made sense
The acting in this movie was pretty good. Mainly Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickum and Chris Cooper as the father. First, Jake. He was a great actor and you could think that you were right by him making those rockets. He was just a great adventurer. Chris Cooper as the father was an interesting character that didn't really like his son all that much. He was extremely hard to be with at the beginning but you can tell he softened up near the end. The rest of the cast was good.
I really found this interesting because I am sort of interested in aerodynamics, but I don't see myself making a career out of it. The rockets were really cool, and the explosions they made were cool too.
All in all, this was a great movie, and should be seen by everybody because even the small ones will like it.
