10/10. Film version of the stage musical, based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem. Tevye the Milkman is a Jewish peasant in pre-Revolutionary Russia, coping with the day-to-day problems of `shtetl' life, his Jewish traditions, his family (wife and daughters), and state-sanctioned pogroms.
No, you don't have to be Jewish to love this musical treat! I seriously think that this was an accurate telling of what happened to the Jews in Russia. It's sad that it happened but it's a great movie nonetheless.
Topol as Tevye was great. I don't think I could have found a better man to play the part. He did a great job singing and everything else. He should be proud oh himself. Norma Crane as Golde was good though we didn't see too much of her. If I'm remembering that Leonard Frey was Motel, then he did a good job, but once again we didn't see too much of him. Molly Picon as Yente was kind of funny. She is your seterotypical Jewish Matchmaker, and I found her to be really good. Paul Mann as Lazer Wolf was good for his part. I must not forget the Rabbi, the all powerful rabbi. He was good but I have forgotted his name.
They sang many songs throughout the movie, but they are all remarkbly good songs for the most part. I will always remember Tradition, and If I were a Rich Man. Those are probably the best songs out of the whole musical.
As I watched the DVD, and if you've seen the movie, you remember the Dream Sequence that Tevye "dreams". They put it in full color on the DVD as an extra but I'm glad they desaturated it to make it look black and white. I truthfully think it worked better for the movie.
All in all, this was a great movie. If you haven't seen it, go spend the $5 to see the movie or see the play. It's well worth it.
