Foundation of Lies

“Yesterday on the stair I saw a man who wasn’t there…”

I saw him for only a moment in this mess called time. At first I couldn’t be sure that it was in fact him. It’s been so many years, but then maybe the whole world changes, but the institution that is Curt Wild remains the same right down to the bleached blonde hair.

I was supposed to get on the subway and go do some research on Brian Slade even though I knew more that I cared to already. I couldn’t stop thinking about Curt a man I had put out of my mind for nearly a decade. That man had to be him, I was certain. I began thinking of all the reasons why he could possibly be here. I wanted him to be looking for me, but it seemed more likely he was looking for Brian as I was. I couldn’t help myself. I turned to follow him.

I ran back up the stairs and ran as fast as I could, keeping my eye all the while on the blonde hair in the distance. It seemed as though I would never catch up with him. The harder I tried the farther he seemed to get away from me. Suddenly, I began to wonder what I would say to him if I ever caught up to him. “Hi, I’m the man you had a one night stand with,” didn’t seem too good nor did “I love you.”

Curt had stopped a few feet away from me and turned to say something. I just stared waiting for his words while hanging on his past ones. “Look,” Curt spoke. I watched his lips form every word. “I don’t know where he is and if I did I wouldn’t tell you. Please stop following me. I’m sick of the past. Find someone else to torment!” He turned back around and started to walk again.

“I’m sorry.” I shouted after him, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I didn’t know what to say. I just didn’t want him to leave. “I just saw you and thought I’d see if you wanted to grab a cup of coffee. I’m Arthur Stuart. And you’re Curt Wild. I recognized you back there.” I don’t know what possessed me. A lie seemed the best way to hold onto him this time.

“Oh, now it’s my turn to be sorry. It’s just usually journalists are the only one to follow me. The whole Brian thing.”

Well, I am a journalist, but I’m not doing a story on you.” That was technically true. “So what do ya say? Want to get some coffee?”

“Sure”
