Epitaph
By: Shadow
Christian could hear the sound of his own footsteps echoing
on the soft ground.
It had been one week since
Satine’s funeral. He had finally gotten the courage to go see her grave. He
hadn’t attended her funeral. From what he heard from
He silently searched the graveyard for a tombstone marked
“Satine”. His smile vanished and bitter tears took its place. He saw a small
tombstone with an angel sitting on top. It read “To Satine, my life, my love,
my Sparkling Diamond”. He had written that. He knelt beside the grave and
gently placed the bunch of white roses he was carrying. He stood up and more
tears filled his eyes. He turned to leave but turned back with a sigh. He sat
down beside the mound and started to sing softly;
“Come what may,
Come what may,
I will love you
until my...dying...day”
He began to sob, quietly at first, then with more and more
abandon. He flung himself down on the ground and wished with all the vehemence
of his broken and tortured heart that Zidler had buried him in the soft earth
with Satine. He lay there for a long time, his sobs
quieted and began to talk to her. He told her all the things he wished he had
said; of how much he missed her.
About 2 hours later he stood up, wiped his face and suit
and turned to walk out of the graveyard. Then he heard a voice, not knowing
whether it came from his head or was carried on the wind. He distinctly heard
Satine's voice whisper, “Tell our story Christian. So I’ll always be with you.”
“No!” he cried “I can’t go on
without you!”
“You have to go on Christian.
You have so much to give,” said the voice.
“I love you.”
“No!” he prayed, “Please stay
with me. Don’t go.”
But the voice was gone. As if accepting that Satine
was gone Christian sang softly, “I love you until the...end...of...time.” A single tear running down his cheek he
walked out of the graveyard towards the setting sun.
