The Diamond Dog Chronicles
Mariclaire: Touched By The Hand Of Baz
Chapter 4 Part 5
~ By Magenta ~
Mariclaire woke up, her head in a daze and still in strange surroundings.
She lifted her head up off the floor, “Oh, no...it wasn’t a dream,” she said dismayed, slumping back down.
The soft sound of sobbing drew her back to reality. She took to the air and noticed that it was Satine. She could sense Satine was conflicted about her present situation. Mariclaire could hear what Satine was thinking and her head was in a mess. There was a spark in Satine’s heart for Christian, however, she was doing her darndest to quash it, and was subsequently breaking her own heart.
Mariclaire thought if she had to watch anymore of this she would join Satine in and weep like a baby. She thought back to her Order of the Baz and remembered that it was her job to, ‘counsel Satine in the ways of love, release her inner hearts desire, make her bring them to the surface.’ But how in the name of Baz was she to do it!?
‘Let’s see,’ Mariclaire thought, ‘whenever I’m upset or in need of cheering up what do I do?? Uh, watch Titanic...no, that’s not going to work here...OH OH, I’ve got it, listen to Celine! The queen of love!’
Mariclaire considered for a moment how she was going to approach Satine. She tried to make herself visible again, however, as a rookie, it seemed that was not possible a second time.
‘I guess I’ll have to get to her the only other way, I’ll talk to her conscience... better yet, I’ll SING to her conscience!’ Mariclaire thought excitedly.
‘It’s worth a shot,’ she thought to herself, ‘here goes nothing...’
Mariclaire moved toward Satine, sat comfortably on the shoulder of her red dress and began to counsel her through song.
I saw your teardrops, and I heard you cry
All you need is time
Seek me and you shall find
You have everything and you’re still lonely
It don't have to be this way
Let me show you a better day,
Because I’m your ange-l…uh, I’m your Faerie
Satine began to nervously pace the room, but fortunately had stopped crying, Mariclaire continued;
Love is on the way
On wings of...Faeries
Satine, you know its true, you feel it coming through
Love is on the way
Mariclaire loved to sing and her passion for singing and love combined helped her guide Satine,
You thought life was logical
That love was a miracle
That happened to someone else but you
Maybe Baz said a little prayer
I looked up when you were there
And the rest is history
Mariclaire was slightly startled when Satine responded, up until now she hadn’t been sure if Satine could even hear her. Satine seemed to be warming to the idea of love,
You've touched me far too deep for this to be denied
Only my fear stands in our way
Send me a lover
Someone to believe in
Please send me someone I can hold
Mariclaire could now see what the problem was, Satine was afraid to get hurt. In the past what Satine thought was love was nothing of the sort, she was scared to open her heart. Mariclaire gave it one last shot,
You're heading for something
Somewhere you've never been
Sometimes you’re frightened
But you’re ready to learn
Of the power of love!
Mariclaire had given it her best, but for a long while afterward Satine just stood by her dresser, not moving, not saying a word. She just stood, thoughts off in the distance, so clouded that even Mariclaire had a hard time hearing them.
Without prior warning, suddenly Satine began to sort through her feelings. She sang about what was really troubling her. Life at the Moulin Rouge, its restrictions, and most importantly, it seemed Mariclaire had succeeded in getting her to contemplate love.
‘Oh, no!’ Mariclaire thought, ‘I almost forgot...’
Out loud as if reading from memory she remembered the file, “Once she has expressed her inner yearning for love, be sure Christian is the next person she lays eyes on and...and stars will collide!”
While Satine made her way outside and on top of the Elephant, Mariclaire dashed over to Christian’s garret in order to bring him to Satine. However when she arrived he was gone.
“Oh no!” she exclaimed.
‘Where could he be at this hour?’ she thought.
She dashed down the streets of Montmartre, flew over the heads of those still partying inside the Moulin Rouge and still Christian was nowhere to be found.
Mariclaire, was beginning to worry, but there was no time for that. All she could do now was go back to Satine and make sure she doesn’t lay eyes on any other man.
“Oh my God...uh, Baz, she’s courtesan, how the hell am I going to do that?!” she said out loud, whilst flying back to the elephant.
‘If I keep talking to myself people are gonna think I’m weird, ugh, what are you thinking about Mariclaire, you are weird, you’re a faerie for Baz’s sake!’
Finally she made her way back to Satine and was astounded to find her already locked in battle with Christian.
He was charmingly attempting to persuade her in the ways of love. Satine was opposed to his suggestions, however, Mariclaire suspected it wouldn’t be hard to break through her walls.
Mariclaire watched their banter,
You, you will be mean
No I won't
And I, I'll drink all the time
Christian Proclaimed,
We should be lovers!
We can't do that,
Mariclaire smiled, noting that
Satine didn’t respond “no”, but rather said it wasn’t possible given the
situation.
We should be lovers! And that's a fact.
Know nothing would keep us together
We could steal time
Satine finally bent to his
argument and they sung in unison,
Just for one day. We can be heroes, forever and ever. We can be heroes
forever and ever. We can be heroes just because . . .
Mariclaire began to feel all warm and fuzzy inside as they proclaimed their love
for one another. Christian took Satine into his arms as she sung,
How wonderful life is . . .
He finished,
Now you're in the world . . .
Satine could not resist the poet’s charm any longer, Mariclaire
clasped her hands in excitement as she voyeuristically watched the couple.
“You're going to be bad for business...I can tell.” Satine whispered, before capturing Christian’s lips in hers for a passionate embrace.
Mariclaire was so ensconced in the beauty before her that she barely noticed the sky light up in bright flashes and just like fireworks, stars collided.
This was her signal from above, she had completed her task, united her charges and could return home.

:: FLASH ::
Mariclaire appeared in a strange white room. There was a man sitting on a mat in front of her doing some weird stretching in a white cotton shirt and matching pants.
“Baz,” Mariclaire voiced knowingly.
Baz stopped his yoga moves and turned around to face the new arrival.
“Aaah, MC! You did it, I knew you wouldn’t let me down,” he beamed.
Mariclaire smiled, “Yes, I guess...but I don’t know exactly how much I did. It all seemed to work out for itself.”
“Yeah, it’ll do that sometimes,” he chuckled reminiscently.
“WHAT?! Then why did you send me?” Mariclaire responded irate that her efforts were irrelevant.
“Well...to make sure everything worked out...and like I said, you needed something more in life.” Baz spieled.
“What ‘more’ exactly am I supposed to get from this?” Mariclaire almost demanded.
Baz sighed, put his creamy hand on Mariclaire’s shoulder and began walking with her.
“Mariclaire, I can tell you the meaning of life...”
:: FLASH ::
Mariclaire was on the floor beside her bedroom widow when she came to. Shaking her head and standing up, Mariclaire had a vague, fuzzy feeling in her head.
‘I guess I must have fainted from shock or something,” Mariclaire thought, now remembering that lightning had struck near the window when she went to check out the noise.
She looked at the window once more, sure enough, the pane was broken but there was nothing she could do just now. Mariclaire pulled the curtains across the window and got back into her safe, warm bed.
For a moment, she lay in quite contemplation. Mariclaire had a feeling that she should be remembering something but couldn’t quite grasp what it was.
‘Can’t have been too important if I have forgotten,’ she reasoned.
Mariclaire put her head on the pillow and then moments before she fell asleep voiced her thoughts out loud,
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
