The Diamond Dog Chronicles
Chapter 3 KATE Part 1
~ By Mariclaire ~
Kate was running down the streets of Montmartre, her curly brown hair whipping behind her. She was headed towards Christian’s garret, she had to let him know how she felt. Ever since she first saw him, she had been completely infatuated; thinking of nothing but him.
Memories of the past weeks swirled through her head. The first time she saw
Christian was after a performance of “Diamond’s are a Girl’s Best Friend”. She
had seen him in the audience during the show and raced through the Moulin Rouge
in search of him. When she made it to the dimly lit courtyard, out of breath and
out of hope, her eyes fell upon her best friend, Satine, in the arms of the man
she had been searching for. It made her crazy with jealousy.
Satine and Kate had shared an apartment and been best friends ever since they
were children, but they hardly ever even spoke to each other anymore. Not that
she could have even if she wanted to. Satine was always out with Christian.
Sneaking around right under the eyes of that stupid duke.
Kate rolled her eyes just thinking about the rat. He was so selfish, he wanted
Satine to himself, not bothering to care what made her happy.
Kate stopped abruptly, ‘is that what I’m doing to Christian?’ She asked herself.
‘Am I at the level of the Duke?’
“No,” she said out loud, receiving a few awkward glances from people as she
began running again.
‘No,’ she continued in her thoughts. ‘The Duke wants Satine like a…
possession. He doesn’t
love her. I want Christian because I love him. Yes, I love him, need him. This
is totally different…’
Kate stopped thinking when she reached Christian’s run down door. She lifted a
shaky hand to knock when all of a sudden, the door flew open to reveal a very
frazzled Christian.
“Oh Kate, you’re just who I was about to come look for,” he said.
‘Well maybe I’m not the only one with something to say,’ Kate thought.
“Really?” she replied with all the innocence she could muster.
Christian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a piece of paper and
handed it to her. “Yes, could you please give this to Satine?”
Kate felt numb as she looked down at the folded note. “Of course,” she whispered
hoarsely.
“Thank you,” he breathed, rushing around to make sure he was ready. He then
leaned down and gave Kate a quick kiss on the cheek before sprinting out the
door with his suitcase.
Kate felt tears of anger as she opened up the letter and read;
Darling~
Meet me at the train station at 5:30.
Love, Christian
Kate felt her heart being ripped in two from the words. The painful reality hit
her that she could never have him, he loved Satine.
She slowly re-folded the paper and headed back to the small apartment
she shared with Satine. The whole way, she felt a wave of horrible emotions. She
didn’t even pay attention to where she was going and bumped into several
passerby on the way home.
When Kate got there, she found Satine in a state much like the way she
found Christian. She was buzzing around the room, putting a few possessions
together to pack in her bag.
The whole scene irritated Kate and before Satine could say hello she
mumbled, “Christian wanted me to give this to you,” and thrust the note into her
hand.
“Oh, thank you!” Satine exclaimed, looking up from what she was doing.
When she saw Kate’s bloodshot eyes, she got worried and put a hand on her
forehead, “are you feeling sick? You don’t look very well.”
‘Try getting your heart pounded on and see how hot you look,’ Kate
wanted to scream. But instead, she just put on a smile and replied, “no, I’m
fine.”
Satine didn’t quite believe her friend, but she had no time to question
her further. Without any warning, she threw her arms around Kate, “oh, I’m going
to miss you so much!” she cried.
Kate slowly wrapped her arms around Satine and came to the realization
that she was not just losing Christian, she was losing Satine. Tears began to
flood her eyes once more. “I’ll miss you, too,” she choked.
Satine pulled back and wiped away Kate’s tears. “Oh come now, we can’t
be blubbering like this. I’ll write as soon as I get to London, I promise.” She
managed a small smile and embraced her friend one last time before picking up
her small bundle and waving as she went out the door of their apartment; which
now just belonged to Kate.
She stood in the middle of the small room, shaking with tears of anger
and sadness. She was losing so much, so quickly, it was too much for her to
take. All she wanted was something to numb the pain.
Just then, Kate remembered the old bottles of Absinthe that she and
Satine used to fool around with when they were younger. They had just been used
for mere drinking games, but now, as she searched frantically through their
cupboards, she needed them for a much more important purpose. When she finally
found what she was looking for, she held the smooth bottle in her hands and
stared at the green fairy on the label as she began to sing;
She’d do anything to sparkle in his eye
She would suffer, she would fight and compromise
She’s been wishing on the stars that shine so bright
For answers to questions that will haunt her tonight
She had managed to get the bottle open and had taken her first shot. She
instantly felt the effects and a loud buzzing rang in her ears as the world
began to come out of focus.
She must rinse this all away
She can’t hold him this way
She must rinse this all away
She can’t love him this way
As Kate continued drinking, her thoughts came in erratic, illogical bursts.
‘Love is such a cruel lie. It sets you up for pain.
Damn you, Christian…’
How she’d be soothed, how she’d be saved if he could see
She needs to be held in his arms to be free
But everything happens for reasons that she will never understand
‘Til she knows that the heart of a woman will never be found in the
Arms of a man
The green fairy was dancing around Kate, laughing evilly at her when she
squinted at the taste of the bitter, green liquid. She didn’t care, she just
wanted anything to make her stop thinking about Christian. But that wasn’t what
the green fairy had in store for her.
She must rinse this all away
She can’t hold him this way
She must rinse this all away
She can’t love him this way
Suddenly, a hallucinated image of Christian appeared before Kate. He looked so
handsome with his bright blue eyes shining and his hair falling loosely in his
face. He came towards her and ran a gentle hand across the length of her arm.
And if she runs away she fears she won’t be
followed
What could be worse than leaving something behind
And as the depth of the oceans slowly become shallow
It’s loneliness she finds…
Christian was quickly taken from Kate’s side and soon an image of Satine
appeared that he began kissing. She trembled with jealousy as she sang;
If only he was mine
She’d do anything to sparkle in his eye
She would suffer, she would fight and compromise
She’s been wishin’ on the stars that shine so bright
For answers to questions that will haunt her tonight
Soon all the images became jumbled and Kate was desperate just to reach out and
touch the one she loved;
She must rinse him
She must rinse him
She can’t rinse him
She can’t rinse him
She can’t, she won’t, she must rinse him
She can’t, she won’t, she must rinse him
Without warning, the green fairy popped Kate’s comforting image of Christian
with a wave of her hand and began to spin around, her demonic, shrieking
laughter filling everything.
She must rinse this all away
She can’t hold him this way
She must rinse this all away
She can’t love him this way
Kate’s head was spinning and all she could see was that damn fairy, flying
faster and faster until finally she aimed the bottle at her and heaved it,
seeing only the shatter of broken glass before her world exploded into darkness.
