Not your average Calabite. Balaam's passion for destruction runs as deep as any other of his band, but mindless physical damage is just not his style, nor is it that of his Prince. Balaam's passion comes from destroying ideals and concepts; his role as a lawyer allows him to destroy marriages, companies, lives, with relative impunity. He will take on any case that will give him the chance to do damage, regardless of the background. He is as happy campaigning for a band of ecologists (he can put hundreds of employees in a dangerous plant out of work) as he is defending a murderer (ruins the both the lives of the victim's families and their faith in the justice system). He works with a small but elite law firm in whichevercitysuits, and has a firm enough Role to maintain this seemingly indefinitely. His presence has caused the firm to degenerate into a truly vicious pit, but this hasn't really been noticed, or even effected the other lawyers work. He's really trying to get in on the destruction of Microsquish, but hasn't had much luck so far.
Whenever he can get away with it he uses his Songs and Attunements to devastating effect in the courtroom, using Polarise on the defendants' lawyer and one of his supporting witnesses, for example, or using the Song of Charm to wreck someone's mind during an intense interrogation, or to play buddies with the judge. This does of course fulfil his rites from Malphas with consummate ease, slightly balancing the heavy cost of Essence this requires. But even without these tricks he's a very competent lawyer.
He is not above getting his hands dirty of course, and uses the songs of Form and Possession to set other people up in dangerous situations, often using photos of the "witness" as sudden evidence in court. He is not so stupid as to attempt this when the victim has a solid alibi for the period though; he keeps close tabs on what his enemies are doing and when. Really, there is very little Balaam won't do to get the edge on someone.
Despite all this he does on a rare occasion like to cut loose and go on a decent rampage. He normally travels to another city and hooks up with some old friends when he does this, and then for a few days all pretensions are gone, the suit is ditched, and he's a true Calabite. He never uses his resonance for corporeal destruction in court, as it's far too risky, but he does sometimes use the attunement granted to him by Malphas. He keeps a selection of pencils in his pockets at all times as targets in case a resonance attempt fails, as he feels that he may well have enough Discord as is. He also strenuously avoids servitors of Asmodeus, which can be difficult in his line of work.
Balaam's Discord is proving awkward. His Addiction started as an effort to blend in with other high-flying types, but has yet to prove too drastic, but his nature has always seen him get far too attached to things, thus leading to his Bound Discord.
He appears as a large, fit man in his early-thirties; not too pumped up, but no sap either. He has a friendly, handsome face, and a warm attitude - everyone's friend. This all changes in the courts, when he can become your own, personal demon. He wears neat, expensive suits. A lot of them. His aura of entropy does go through things rather fast, so he can often be found in restrooms during the day, sprucing himself up to preserve the respectable image. He has a small, neat flat, with little in the way of possessions, but he does have a TV, and watches Ally MacBeal regularly, picking up ideas on how to hurt people. He also has, like most servitors of Factions, a fondness for anything involving Jerry Springer.
Balaam means "the ancient of the people" or, as the demon prefers, "the destruction of the people".
Balaam is a balanced starting PC.
