DESCRIPTION:
Larry
Porter is an American pianist who also plays traditional
Afghan music on the rebab, an instrument particularly
characteristic of this music culture. He first encountered
the rebab, a short-necked lute with 18 strings, on
his journey through Asia in 1976, at which time he
had the extraordinary opportunity to study with the
renowned master, Ustad Mohammad Omar, in Kabul. Since
then he has developed a unique style in which he combines
folk music with elements of classical improvisation.
|
His recent CD
"The Magical Rebab of Larry Porter" has been highly
acclaimed in the United States. The Afghan magazine, Lemar-Aftaab,
based in the US wrote: "The Magical Rebab of Larry Porter
is truly captivating. Porter has mastered the rebab to perfection
with his noted style. Without a doubt, he is one of the best
rebab players of his generation." Larry's interest in music
began at the age of 6, and at the age of 22, he became intensely
interested in Arabic, Central Asian and Indian music and "...increasingly
disillusioned with the unbridled commercialism of the music
industry in the West"
Larry's repertoire consists of traditional Afghan folk songs
and Hindi film tunes as well as Pakistani ghazals and classical
pieces.
He is accompanied by the empathetic tabla player, Franc Menusan.
Franc has for many years played an important role in the Indian
music scene in New York and is also an accomplished sitar
player.

DESCRIPTION:
Bachar
is a young singer and composer of his own kind. His
style is different from what is common in the world
of the Arabic song today.
Since the beginning of his musical career, he was
interested in the Arabic traditional singing and he
studied the Syrian, Egyptian and Iraqi classics. Bachar
was raised up in Damascus and his first
|
 |
experience was
with the Sufi chants of the dervishes in his neighbourhood.
He was attracted to their rituals and poetry. Since then his
musical career was set on a certain path; it was the starting
point from which he discovered the relation between him and
the culture of his society.
Bachar's fascination with this line of singing was due to
its aesthetic and artistic aspects rather than to its religious
content. He is more concerned with Sufi heritage as it relates
to today's reality and to contemporary issues. This is evident
in the Sufi lyrics which he chooses for his songs and compositions.
In addition, Bachar sang poems written by prominent Arab poets
such as Badr Chaker Al Sayab and Mahmoud Darwish. His tunes
are contemporary and innovative, yet they are closely connected
with the Arab musical heritage.
Bachar has just published his first album "Les Chants
Sufis de Bachar Zarkan" and he has performed in various
local and international events, such as the Jerash festival
in Jordan, Al-Madina theatre in Beirut, Kairouan festival
in Tunisia, Asila Festival in Morocco, and had several performances
in New York, London and Paris, where he sang at the Institue
du Monde Arabe and the National Institute for Oriental Languages
and Cultures.

DESCRIPTION:
From the first moment you hear this young artist
playing the oud, you feel that he has a great talent
and that he has developed a refined and sophisticated
technique. Chadi
Kassem is a 23 year old singer and oud player from
Lebanon. He started playing oud at the age of 8 and
studied his first two years in Lebanon with a well
known music teacher, Iskandar Bramili. Later on at
the age of 17, after moving to Canada, he was instructed
by a distinguished violinist and oud player, Jamal
Kassis, in Ottawa. For about 8 years, this musician
helped Chadi to develop his talent, channel it and
train his voice.
|
In 1997 Chadi
went to Lebanon and studied with the well known composer and
oud player Charbel Rouhana, who teaches oud at the National
Conservatory of Music and at the Institue of Music at Kaslik
University. Chadi was greatly influenced by this musician and
he is working on his system. While in Lebanon, Chadi also took
vocal lessons and music theory. He plays keyboards and sings
and has made some steps in composition and arranging.
We are pleased to host his first production and present his
work on our site. In the first piece, Chadi plays an improvisation
in maqam Nahawand, and in the second one he sings one of Mohammad
Abdel Wahab's most beautiful songs.
