Nitin
Sawhney is a composer, singer, songwriter, producer and
re-mixer. Early this year he received The South Bank Show
Award For Popular Music. Nitin is an "Asian Modernist".
His musical vocabulary draws on Asian traditional &
contemporary sounds, flamenco guitar & Latin rhythms,
drum and bass, tabla juxtaposed with techno bass and a
rich array of varied and original voices. His music is
a kind of world-music fusion .
The first song is from his album "Displacing The
Priest", and Immigrant is from his magnificent last
album, "Beyond Skin", which deals with the central
issue of the exchange of values and ideas between East
and West
The good news is that Sawhney is nowadays collaborating
with the Algerian Rai singer, Cheb Mami, in his forthcoming
album and will be producing four tracks from Mami's new
record. |

Nusrat
Fateh Ali Khan, internationally recognized for his mastery
of a form of Urdu music known as Qawwali, began to embrace
nontraditional elements in his music since 1990, and cooperated
with world famous musicians such as Peter Gabriel, Michael
Brook and Massive Attak. Qawwali is the vocal expression
of Sufism, the mystical sect of Islam that embraces music
as a means of becoming one with the Divine. Khan was first
brought before the public by Peter Gabriel's WOMAD Foundation
( World of Music, Art and Dance ) in 1984. Khan stirred
audience into rapture with the intensity of his singing,
and has gained a large following around the world.
Mustt Mustt (Lost In His
Work) was remixed by Massive Attack, and Intoxicated
by Michael Brook. Sadly, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan passed
away in August of 1997. |
