The 2004 Santa Barbara International Film Festival draws 40,000 visitors to the greater Santa Barbara area. The ten-day fest ran from Jan. 30 to Feb. 8, 2004.

Actress/writer/director Mary Kay Place was the SBIFFs first "guest curator." Her Women in Cinema sidebar included a select group of six to eight films, all directed by women. The Women in Cinema schedule is available at the festival's page:

One of the attendees had this to say about the event:

"I just met Mary Kay on Friday at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. She was very nice. I got curious about her career & found your page. She was a curator (as you probably know) for the event. I was in a screening with like just 10 other people and when it was over, I looked over & there she was. Everyone was very impressed by a documentary we'd watched called
Beah about the life of actress Beah Richards & hung around after to discuss it. I told her how much I love Loretta Haggers & how strange her relationship with Charlie was & Mary Kay said, 'Well, who knows where Loretta came from, what her background was. And here's this nice older guy who dotes on her. I thought it was pretty natural.' She also said when they showed "MHMH" on TV Land, it was too bad they never got to the episodes involving the Jeeters where there's a Condos for Christ telethon - she loves those episodes."

HBO aired this movie in conjunction with their Black History Month programming during February, 2004.

"The Animation of Faith Hubley and Emily Hubley" was a collection of the extraordinary animated films by the Hubley family presented by daughter Emily Hubley (
Hedwig And The Angry Inch) at Santa Barbara's Museum of Modern Arts.  After the screening, Emily Hubley discussed recently completing a screenplay in the Sundance Screenwriting Lab with mentor Mary Kay Place. The story will combine live action and animated elements.  Emily's films reflect three generations of personal animated short subjects that transcend genre.
Here is an article about Emily Hubley, one of the film makers featured in Mary Kay's Film Festival sidebar.
