Loblaws Supermarket, Opened 1989

When one approaches Hyde Park Road from the west on Oxford Street, the first part of Oakridge Mall they see is the Loblaws store.

These doors serve as both the entrance to Loblaws and the western entrance into Oakridge Mall. At left is the location that my Scout Troop sold Christmas trees in December 2000 as a fundraiser for CJ'01.

This shot shows the entrance into Loblaws from inside the mall. The outside entrance to Loblaws is located to the left of the entrance visible here.

Upon entering Loblaws, one is greeted by the Ziggys Delicatessen. Behind Ziggys are the bakery and the floral department. Directly to the right of this shot is the produce department. This is the typical look that Loblaws stores had in the 1980s.

This is the produce department at Loblaws. It’s September, and there’s plenty of local produce for sale, especially apples. At one time, prior to about 1997, there was a huge sign hanging from the roof in this section that had a giant picture of a smorgasbord of fruits and vegetables. These giant signs were used in various departments of Loblaws stores in the 1980s, but there was only one such sign at Oakridge. The former Loblaws store at Masonville Place, which existed from 1985 to 1998, also had such giant signs in the meat, dairy, and frozen foods departments.

This is the meats department at Loblaws, looking east from near the floral department. Behind the orange Raid display case on the far left was the automatic bottle return machine. Back in the days of 750-mL pop bottles in Ontario, this was where we returned the bottles. The machine would give one a receipt that they would present to the cashier at the checkout counter, in order to receive the refund. This system was discontinued around 1995, although the machine sat idle behind the Raid display case right through 2004.

Here is another view of the meats department, this time looking west from the dairy department.

This, as the photo suggests, is aisle six in the general merchandise department. For as long as I can remember, this aisle was where juice, breakfast cereal, and maple syrup were located. The aisle sign style in this photo is the style used in most Loblaws stores in the 1980s.

This is the frozen foods section of Loblaws. The case on the right contains TV dinners and French Fries. Ice cream is located in the case to the left, and frozen juice in the case directly ahead. Note the No Name bulk Halloween potato chips located above the cases.

Looking westward from the frozen foods section of Loblaws, towards the checkouts.

Here are the checkout counters. Like any other grocery store, there are plenty of magazines and tabloid newspapers to read while waiting.
