King's Highway 22
Highways
Hwy 22 once served as part of an important highway link between London and Sarnia. The highway connected with Hwy 7 near Watford, and largely followed the Sarnia Road to London, where it turned south to meet up with Hwy 2. Even after Hwy 402 was completed in 1982, Hwy 22 was still an important highway linking north London with Strathroy, but was downloaded in 1998.
King's Highway 22 crown
Prior to 1947, Highway 22 turned southwest at Hickory Corner, and went through Strathroy via today's Middlesex Road 39. In 1947, the Sarnia Road was uploaded as a King's Highway westerly from Hickory Corner to Highway 7, bypassing Strathroy to the north. In this shot, the old alignment of Hwy 22 is visible, looking towards Strathroy. The old highway alignment ran through the grassy area, and met up with the current alignment near where I am taking the photo from. Photo taken 26 April 2004.

This is the south side of the bridge over the Sydenham River on Highway 22 near Poplar Hill. This is a newer bridge design, as it does not have the typical "arch" design that the province used on King's Highways from the 1930s to the 60s. I do not know the exact date of the building of this bridge, but it is definitely the work of the province. If anyone knows when this bridge was built, please e-mail me with the details. This photo was taken from Middlesex Road 16 (Komoka Road) just south of its junction with Highway 22, on 26 April 2004.

Highway 22 looking eastbound towards London from Middlesex Road 17 (Nairn Road) in Lobo. The speed limit along this stretch of highway is 70 km/h, but outside of Lobo, Middlesex County has posted it at 90 km/h, which is unusual for a two-lane highway in Southern Ontario. Middlesex County has posted a number of their other County Roads with a speed limit of 90 in rural areas, including former Highways 73 and 81, as well as Middlesex Road 20. Photo taken 26 April 2004.
