OPERA SAUVAGE (1979)

(reviewed by Robert Grazer)

HIGH POINTS: Hymne, Reve, Chromatique.  LOW POINTS: None.

Pleasant. Supposedly one of Vangelis’ finest moments, I can easily see why some people like it. It shows how this sort of electronic music should be done. This and Chariots Of Fire. Now there’s a great movie for you. Great soundtrack too. That’s when I first took note of Vangelis. Then I see this Opera Sauvage I’ve heard about pop up for fifty cents, and I wasn’t about to let a good deal like that slip away. So I get it, put it one, and, wow, it’s not a whole lot different than the Chariots Of Fire soundtrack in places. Some of the themes here are familiar, but Opera Sauvage was released first, so I don't really have to take that into account while reviewing this album.

Overall this makes for excellent background music, for any sort of simple or quiet task. I can put it on when a video game’s soundtrack jut isn’t enough, and except in the case I'm playing some bloody FPS, it works fine. There are a few tracks that are notable on their own, “Hymne” definitely being one of these, as well as the most well-known track on the album. An amazing and melodic theme to begin the whole album on a definite high note. The extended epic of “Reve” is also a personal favorite on the album, reminding me of some of the slower sections from Vangelis’ 1982 soundtrack. The other epic, “Flamants Roses,” is only slightly lesser as one of the most atmospheric and peaceful tracks on the album.

I believe this is a soundtrack, and not being familiar with the French TV series or whatever it is, I can't make much of a comment in that aspect, but it does make me somewhat curious. What type of TV show would have these peaceful electronic sounds as a soundtrack? I guess it doesn't matter. Opera Sauvage is definitely worth a look if you're interested in Vangelis, with nothing on here that seems like filler to me. It’s nice, mild background music, which is one of Vangelis’ talents. Get it for the right reasons, and you're sure to enjoy it. And hey, our buddy Jon Anderson plays the harp on here! It doesn't get much better than that.

OVERALL RATING: 7
