UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH

REVIEWS:

A stripped down acoustic trio (with occasional keyboard/organ embellishments), Unbelievable Truth are a relatively unknown British band led by main songwriter Andy Yorke (brother of Thom, Radiohead's singer).  They released their debut Almost Here in 1998, and were unfortunately dropped by their record label before the release of their second, and subsequently split.

ALMOST HERE (1998)

(reviewed by Nick Karn)

Unbelievable Truth's debut album, unlike the emotional tension and strong, often somber mood of vocalist Andy Yorke's brother's band Radiohead (led by Thom), is a very mellow, relaxing and intimate affair.  Of course, this laid-back atmosphere takes awhile to get used to, as these 11 songs don't distinguish themselves right away, but after a few listens, the pleasant hooks and lyrics begin to sink in, and Almost Here reveals itself to be quite a worthwhile and pretty consistent affair.  The opening "Solved" gets things off on the right start, with its' introspective lyrics and powerful chorus, while the moody, bass-driven "Angel" has a really gorgeous and sparse aura about it.

The two strongest tracks contained on the second half, meanwhile, are "Building", driven by accomplished lyrics, melody and tight band playing when the song gets a bit heavier, and "Finest Little Space", where the acoustic guitar and bassline merge perfectly with an emotional soaring chorus.  "Higher Than Reason", meanwhile, is just a great, high quality pop number with a driving acoustic riff, and the soft closer "Be Ready" and the reflective, fairly powerful ballad-like title track are other fine examples of pure beauty on this album.  A couple other more minor highlights on this recommendable debut are the pleasing stripped down rock of "Stone" and "Settle Down".

OVERALL RATING: 7
