PEARL JAM/FRANK BLACK

July 19th, 1998@ Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, BC, Canada

(reviewed by Andrew McQuillan)

This is old in contrast to other reviews but it was wicked so here goes.Frank Black and the Catholics opened the show. I'm not too familiar with his post Pixies output (aside from Los Angeles) and I wasn't then, so I can't really comment much on the opening of the show but... Pearl Jam opened with the first two songs off of No Code (Sometimes/Hail Hail) and then kicked into 'Go' and 'Brain of J' if my memory from 3 years ago serves me correct. It was a high octane opening. Other songs played during the set included hits like Even Flow and Jeremy, Daughter (with Neil Young tag), Rearviewmirror, Dissident, Given To Fly, MFC (awesome song to hear live if there ever was one), Wishlist (oooh, with a mirrorball), Nothingman (really one of the truly underrated PJ songs), Corduroy, Better Man, Lukin, Off He Goes, Not For You, and Last Exit. All these songs are not in order but I know Last Exit was the last song of the set. It was an appropriate set closer because of it's title and because of it's ending.

Eddie didn't do much talking during the show but the crowd seemed to go nuts when he mentioned Vancouver. And so he should mention us. After all, Vancouver wasn't originally on the tour itinerary at all and they probably wouldn't have come here if it wasn't for the petition that a local radio set up to get them to come a few measly miles up from Seattle. The house was loud and the rafters were packed.

Things were really cooking in the encore. They played 'Do The Evolution', which kicked heaping ass and they went on to do Leaving Here, Alive and Black. The band threw in a surprise with Yellow Ledbetter but the huge surprise was the final song, 'Baba O'Riley', the cover of that famous Who song in the American Beauty commercial. You can actually download Baba O'Riley from this show on Audiogalaxy if you're lucky. You used to be able to get it on Napster but now Napster sucks ass and has nothing worth downloading. Anyways, it was fucking good.
