WAKE-UP CALL (1993)

(reviewed by Robert Grazer)

A Grammy Award-winning album by the popular Christian rock band, this album is very good, especially coming from a major Christian artist. Most of the major Christian artists are crap (Newsboys, DC Talk, to name just a couple), and to find good music under the label of "Christian" you usually have to look underground at bands that some right-wing evangelicals don't even consider Godly. This is not the case with Wake-Up Call. Heavily Christian lyrics are mixed in with some fine music, and people like it. The album kicks off with "Midnight Oil," a fast rocker with a nice riff and solo. "Good News" is another solid entry, but the next three are undoubtedy the album's lowpoint. "Strong Convictions" is just mediocre, and "He's Been In My Shoes" is plain dumb. Closing off the side is the ultimately forgettable "Praying Man."

Side two, however, starts with the heavier "Underneath The Blood" and another great riff and fantastic chorus. The title track (well, actually it's called "Sleeping Giant," but they say "the sleeping giant needs a wake-up call" enough for it to be called a title track) is a winner, showing some fine vocal work from John Schlitt. It's the next one, though, that provides the album's finest moment. "Believer In Deed" is a surprisingly moving piece due to a beautiful melody backed by very nice playing. "Marks Of The Cross" and "Just Reach Out" close off the album again on a slower and gentler note, giving this album very peaceful feel. You wouldn't expect Wake-Up Call to be as good as it is, and despite a few weak entries this is a fine album worth looking into.

OVERALL RATING: 7
