A PLACE IN THE SUN (1999)

(reviewed by Kevin Baker)

Yup, generica becomes him. His cheese has slid off his cracker, you say. Well, I've got news for you----I LIKE LIT!  OK, when it comes to originality, they're, uh, lacking. But whichever little bugger among them that comes up with the hooks is one talented individual, because let's face it---you can't help BUT sing along to songs as bloody catchy as My Own Worst Enemy and Miserable. Oops, I was actually reviewing music for a second. What's up with that???  No jokes about Rich Bunnell? No mentioning of Leah or Ashley or Lizzy or Elisa or Nancy or Ally or Chell or the Chelle with an "e" or any of my other chicas? WOW!

Aw crap, I just ruined THAT. At any rate, what Lit does is come up with catchily-crafted compositions. Lawd. Call them generic. Call them late 90s junk. Call them masters of expressionism and the very soul of postmodernistic.....ok, that's probably not going to happen. But you can't call them un-catchy. The two obvious musical standouts here are most likely the two you hear on the radio. My Own Worst Enemy is an up-tempo anthem to being an over-partying loser (or just a loser---that's why it's "my" song). Not more than a few months ago, Leah and I did a lovely duet of this song on the way up to Leakey for the high school retreat in the back of the bus. She censored the words. Hehehehe....I didn't.

Oh, and we all know Miserable from it's instantly "stay in your mind all day" first line---"you make me come/you make me complete/you make me compleeeetely miserable." I thought the song was going to be naughtier than it is based on that VERY first phrase. How "clever" of them to make a "normal" "word" sound "like" a "sex"ual innuendo!  As it is, it's basically a "you hurt me but I love you just the same" type depressed happy-go-lucky teen guy anthem with a really neat guitar part at the end of the solo. You MAY also be familiar with Zip-Lock, but it is nowhere near as good as those others.

Now, the non-radio material is NOT as good as My Own Worst Enemy or Miserable, but it's by no means bad---just a little generic. The opening Four is a nice little up-tempo rocker about a relationship gone the way of the dodo. Down is a car/sex song, No Big Thing is just that, Lovely Day is a pleasant rocker, Perfect One is nice but way too trite to be more than just nice, Quicksand is the best non-hit song on here, and the last three songs are...well, the last three songs. Woo-hoo.  I once heard this band described as basically being modern frat-rock.....yeah, I guess so. If you're young and like to have fun, this is an A-OK circular disc of merriment. But if you want something serious.....for heaven's sake DON'T buy a Lit cd.
