LET IT ROLL (1988)

(reviewed by Pat D.)

Oh, the depths to which I have sunk. I raided my parents' CD collection, cause it was either that or start reviewing Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. The last time I listened to this CD was a good 7 years in the past. Back when I had no money to buy CDs and I got my music from my mother's CD rack. Some would say not much has changed, but I can honestly say that I no longer rely on the elderly couple for fulfillment. Not to mention that my musical tastes have changed so I couldn't go back if I wanted.

Anyway, Little Feat are some sort of Cajun/Southern/Country/Rock hybrid. But it WORKS. The reason this album gets a high rating is that almost every song is an enjoybale listen, not that I think it's a great collection for everybody. The only track I really can't stand is the ridiculous "Cajun Girl", and you'll see why if you happen upon this disc. There are two great ass-kicking rockers on here as well "Hate to Lose Your Lovin" and the title track, both of which got lots of airplay back when the band was popular. Great tunes. And they're fairly hard-hitting as well. A lot of the other tracks may be too soft for 99.9% of you, but I dig 'em. So, if your in the mood for something different, see if you can find this record. It'll probably be real cheap. Oh, for some reason, it seems to me that if you're a Dave Matthews freak, you might like this band. I don't know why, but it just SEEMS that way

OVERALL RATING: 8

Hey, I am happy to give you credit for recognizing a fine talented band like Little Feat. Musician wise, there are few if anya cts that are better than these guys. Let It Roll is probably their most commerical record but Dixie Chicken, Waiting For Columbus, and Sailing Shoes are their best music wise. These guys touch on rock, country, soul, jazz, cajun, and more. They do get a bit mellow in spots on this recording but the songs are very focused. I kind of like Cajun Girl as its way different from mainstream rock n roll. Long Time Till I Get Over You and Changin' Luck are two hidden gems as the rhythms are quite spunky. Your rating is pretty on the money in my book.
