BEST OF THE DOOBIES (1976)

(reviewed by John Sieber)

Ya know, some bands are just awesome. For them, a hits compilation just won't do. But hey, the fact remains that there were some bands that were just not that great, and their hits package is all you need. The Doobies fit in the latter. Not that they suck, but listening to them can be a taxing thing to do. Not this hits album, though. This thing rocks! However, this is another artist that you know their music, but you don't know it's them singing. You know? Anyway, the more familiar ones are "China Grove", "Long Train Runnin'", "Listen to the Music", "Black Water" (my personal favorite), "Rockin' Down the Highway" and "Jesus is Just Alright". But even the lesser-known songs are not bad! "Without You" rocks like "Rockin' Down the Highway", that is, pretty damn good! "Takin' it to the Streets" kinda has a "soft rock" (ugh) edge, but its jumpy rhythm sure is infectuous. Not bad. The rest of em, though... eh. Just okay. Not outstanding, but I can tolerate em. I guess. Well! What else is there to say about this one? Thats one thing I hate about compilations: what can be said already has! So, if you're in for a nice set of classic rock, pick this one up!

OVERALL RATING: 8
