RIVER DISTURBANCE (1994)

(reviewed by Robert Grazer)

In the search for a good "Jesus Christ metal" album I find myself here. Actually I bought this because I saw a tape of it for two bucks and I had already heard the first side plus the closing track. It was great so why not? Do you know what? This album is really great. The music is far more emotional than the works of more popular Christian metal acts like Bride and Tourniquet. I mean, side one is pretty darn near perfect. There are five songs on it and each one is amazing. The first two, "Belltown" and "After I Fell," are just beautiful, and the title track has got what was for a long while my favorite guitar solo ever. The talent was so amazing and mixed in with such strong emotion it may longer be my favorite, but there is no way I could ever not love it. Then the acoustic ballad "Now and Then" has got an unforgettable melody and a really great chorus. "Speed of Light" closes the side with the same power the others offered.

How sad that side two must start out so terribly. After five excellent emotional masterpieces, we get a rapcore song. No kidding! The second side opener, "A Little Sleep," is a rapcore song. Where did that come from!? It isn't really bad, but it doesn't fit in here at all. And the next one called "Map" is just filler. Such a pity. Luckily, the two last songs on the album more than make up for it as they are better than anything even the first side gave us. "U Still Smile," other than having a dorky spelling of the word "you" in the title, is a very moving piece. What's funny about it is the melody is very sad even though the lyrics really aren't. Normally a contradiction such as this would call for at least some criticism (such as in the case with Iron Maiden's "Can I Play With Madness"), however here it works out with no problem. Funny, isn't it? The closing "Breathing Still" is the best of them all, though. The solo is even better than the one in the title track, and everyone in this little band is working great to make this one of the greatest heavy metal songs ever. For a while I considered giving this album a 9, but every time I make myself sit through "Map" I tell myself I can't. I'd still advise you too take a look around for a copy at a low price. The good stuff on here is definitely worth it.

OVERALL RATING: 8
