DANZIG (1988)

(reviewed by Nick Karn)

Danzig's debut is a showcase of Glenn Danzig's songs from the dark side with Satanic leanings, his Elvis meets Jim Morrison-like vocals, and demonic riffing that here sounds like highly derivative AC/DC more often than not, especially in songs like "Mother" (which would prove to be the band's only significant hit), which almost begs for Bon Scott's appearance in the intro, while the groove of "Not Of This World" is also not dissimilar to the legendary hard rock band. The band's ambitions also really don't work all the time, as some of the songs seem cartoonish rather than threatening, although there are tracks like the catchy "She Rides" (with some very masterful poetic lyrics and an awesome melody in the chorus) and the driving, convincing riff and sing-along chorus of the opener "Twist Of Cain", and the aggressive "Soul On Fire" that hint at what this band could be capable of.

OVERALL RATING: 6
