HOT SAKI & BEDTIME STORIES (1996)

(reviewed by Philip Maddox)

Another album that I got due to the inclusion of an excellent track on the Got TVT? compilation. The track that appeared there, "It's Gonna Get Worse", is excellent. It's pure pop, to be sure, but it's catchy, groovy, excellent pop. It's a great tune. The rest of the album doesn't quite hit those highs. In fact, the rest of the album is consistently "pretty good", which means that while the album isn't at all bad, it's hardly very memorable. It does have some good moments, though. For example, the guitar line in "Milkshake" and its pretty chorus are very nice. "Make Me Smile" has a great chant that repeats a couple times throughout. The cute "Sign Of The Cross", with some really weird lyrics ("You're looking up at me like a vampire/You're not sucking my blood/You're sucking your thumb/A sign of the cross"), is fun, catchy, and kinda creepy. The opening "Whisper" has some cool verses.

The rest of the album kinda reads the same way. Nice, but never essential. I'm finding it kinda hard to say anything about this album - that's just kinda the way it is. I know! I'll mention that one of the guys in this band dates D'arcy from the Smashing Pumpkins, so she shows up on one track. The track is (surprise surprise) OK. So basically, if you like bubblegummy pop with an occasional slightly darker overtone, you could do much worse. However, no matter what you do, don't buy their debut EP, Sleepy. I listened to that crap twice and sold it. It sucks bad. I won't review it, because I can't remember anything specific about it (other than that the last song has about 10 minutes of feedback), but you have been warned.

OVERALL RATING: 6
