Art of war

(Notice: The title of this book is a reference to book written by Sun Tzu)

(See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Tzu )

Takeda Shingen used a famous phrase from this book as his war banner.

It's worth to read the following summary about Takeda Shingen before reading this file (Source)

Shingen Takeda had a profound effect on the Sengoku-Jidai period of Japan. He influenced many lords with his law system, tax system and administration system. He was probably not as cruel as other warlords but he was aggresive toward military enemies. His war banner contained the famous phrase Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan, taken from Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War.' This phrase translates to Swift as the wind, Silent as a forest, Fierce as fire and Immovable as a mountain.

The phrase demonstrates both Shingen's policies and warfare strategy. Shingen was indeed fierce as fire and was one of the most aggressive warlords of the time period. He moved swiftly as the wind and even after a defeat he would quickly avenge his loss and make a counter-attack. However Shingen's intentions weren't always clear. He would move cautiously and could suddenly attack enemies, thus he was silent as a forest. Despite all of this Shingen was indeed immovable as the mountain. In battle he moved cautiously and made sure he was well defended. Once he had gained a firm hold on territories in Shinano and Kai, Shingen made sure he did not rush into battle and Shingen carefully checked his borders. Even after a defeat he would still hold his ground and thus during his reign the Takeda was well defended.

[Kogoro]

Serial Murders!?

[Yamato]

Yes! Just like in the first case where Torada Yoshiro had serious injuries by a tornado but was left to die....

...and like in the second case, where Tatsuo Kouji was tied and buried in the ground, and beaten to death...

Well... It is also possible that your footsteps were there before taking down her body...

[Kogoro]

Right? Mr first-to-find-the-body...

[Yamato]

Humph... I wanted to ask Torada family about something, and went to their house

(Notice: The right grammar is 聞きたい事があって)

I just came (here) because a servant there told me that everybody went out to the forest to search for Torada Ayaka...

[Kogoro]

But isn't this is too much of coincidence?

(Lit: But, the timing was too much good)

[Kogoro]

Maybe you asked her to come by the cell phone while she was locking herself in the toilet, put her to sleep, curried her, put this robe around her neck, and hanged her! After that, you went to Torada's house like nothing happened!

[Conan]

I don't think so!

I saw the ground before this officer took Ayaka-san down...

[Conan]

There wasn't any footsteps nor cane traces...

That means he couldn't have curried her or hanged her!

[Kogoro]

Are you sure you saw (nothing on the floor)?

[Conan]

うん!

Yes!

[Yamato]

That aside... I heard that the circumstances was strange before she locked herself in the toilet... what happened?

[Tatsuo Shigeyo]

It's a curse...

Page 7

[Tatsuo Shigeyo]

They provoked the anger/outrage of Shingen, and so they were cursed to death! The body of centipede is good proof!!

[Kogoro]

Eh? How is the centipede is related to Takeda Shingen?

[Tatsuo Tamefumi]

You don't know?

[Tatsuo Tamefumi]

Shingen called the people who worked as messengers at the battlefield “centipede people”, and so he made them curry a flag with “centipede” on their shoulders!

(Notice: Need to know what the exact meaning of 伝令役 ~ messenger role)

[Shigetsugu]

Th- That's it! I knew I saw a picture of centipede somewhere!

[Shigetsugu]

I saw someone in the war play in the festival holding a flag (with centipede on it)!

[Torada Naonobu]

How can you go to search for treasure without even knowing this!?

[Kazuha]

Then could that treasure be the treasure of Takeda Shingen....?

[Torada Tatsue]

Yeah

It's the Shingen's hidden gold mine!!

(Comment: If only the detective boys were here!!!)

[Torada Tatsue]

Shigetsugu-san has been [onto this/ keen on it/mad about this] since they found a book and a map talking about that (treasure) in our cellar...

He involved the two people who died few days ago, Ayaka-san, and...

Page 8

...the one over there, Tatsuo Akira-san...

(Comment: So Shigetsugu is not the only one who participated in searching for that treasure)

[Akira]

It is true that we were asked by Shigetsugu to help out with searching for gold...

[Akira]

But we didn't do that for selfish desires!

[Akira]

We wanted to use it for revitalization of the village..

[Akira]

A- And...

Why did Ayaka have to be cursed!?

[Yamato]

She only brought some snacks to the mine...

[Yamato]

It is not a murder... This is a genuine murder...

[Yamato]

It's like what the detective with mustache said, there's no cell phone inside the waist pouch of Tatsuo Ayaka...

Which means she was called while she was locking herself in the toilet...

by the serial murder, that is...

[Yamato]

Needless to say that if you don't want to die, do not wonder around a lone

specially those who were searching for the gold...

You two, that is...

Page 9

[Heiji]

Really?

[Heiji]

Was that armored warrior really standing here?

[Ran]

Y- Yes...

[Kazuha]

He went somewhere immediately though...

[Kogoro]

Why didn't you open the sliding door, and use your karate to catch him?

[Ran]

B- Because I thought it was a ghost and it scared the hell out of me!!

[Kazuha]

Neither Karate nor Aikido work with the ghosts

(Comment: Kazuha has a point here :P)

[Heiji]

Idiot! Things such as ghost do not exist in this world!

[Heiji]

ん?

Umm?

[Conan]

Hey, look, Hattori!

[Conan]

You know what this is, right?

[Heiji]

It looks like a torn vinyl thread which they use when packing things...

[Conan]

I found some pieces of it thrown in the corridor and on the ground...

[Heiji]

Right!

Page 10

[Hattori]

If you attach a bunch of these vinyl threads on a helmet, the shadow of it on this sliding door will look like Takeda Shingen's helmet, Suwa Hossho

[Kogoro]

あん?

Huh?

[Heiji]

This means that the murder did this because he wanted to fan/kindle/stir up (the idea of) Takeda Shingen's curse...

(Notice: The verb あおる is originally used with fire / quarrel / anger)

[Heiji]

And that these were not murders but curses

[Kogoro]

Then Shigetsugu-san who left an armor in his room is the murder?

[Conan]

いや

No

[Conan]

See! There're unfamiliar Zori footsteps...

(Notice: Zori are Japanese footwear sandals)

[Heiji]

They continue till the back gate...

[Ran]

Now that you mentioned it, when we were talking about the armored warrior, Shigetsugu-san said...

[Ran]

The armors which are used in the festival are kept inside a room that nobody use so it's easy for someone to take out one, but the helmets of those armors have no fur/hair on them so (the one we saw) could not be one of them...

(Comment: I just noticed that Japanese people like to say someone / somebody / nobody :P)

[Kogoro]

Then this means someone sneaked in from outside and took out one of the armors and created the shadow of Shingen...

(Comment: Kogoro just said “someone”)

[Heiji]

Or somebody from this house left out his/her footsteps with Zori to make it look like that...

(Comment: Now it's Heiji turn)

Page 11

Also

When we was talking about that, Shigetsugu-san said...

[Kazuha]

...that there were armors in Akira-san's house as well but they had no bushy hair...

[Conan]

Eh? They have armors in that house as well?

[Kazuha]

Y- Yes...

[Ran]

He said that they have decent ones

[Heiji]

In this case, we will go to Tatsuo family,

and you two, stay with that old man!

[Kazuha]

EEEH!?

[Heiji]

I think you are already aware of that but...

Keep your eye on Shigetsugu, the one who searches for the gold...

[Kogoro]

Humph! You don't have to tell me...

[Heiji]

See ya!

[Kazuha]

Again!

[Kazuha]

He left me alone again!

[Ran]

I'm sure he does not want to expose you [Kazuha-chan] to danger!

See... Because we see horrible things and the culprits targets our lives...

(Comment: Ran is talking like a child :P)

[Kazuha]

Is that so?

[Ran]

Yeah! After keeping (you) in suspense, he will [reveal] the truth with a boastful look!

Even Shinichi does this...

[Kazuha]

HEEE

[Ran]

Ah, but in case of Shinichi, I guess (he) doesn't love (me) or anything

(Notice: Ran has been always shy to say the truth of her feeling towards Shinichi)

Page 12

[Yui]

“Swift as that wind”

(Notice: The above is known as Fuurinkazan; the the phrase which Takeda Shingen uses as a war banner)

(You may want to read the notice at the beginning of this page)

(Also see the following link to read more about Fuurinkazan)

http://www.geocities.jp/yatgtke8/1history/1kfgozan.html

[Kazuha]

え?

Eh?

[Yui]

You love that dark skinned boy, don't you?

[Kazuha]

Ah... N-

[Yui]

It is not bad to settle in a place like a mountain and wait deliberately

(Notice: what Yui says now is reference to the Furinkazan Immovable as a mountain”)

[Yui]

But you can also go and do action about it as fast as the wind, while that feeling is still hot...

(Notice: Here, another reference for Furinkazan; “Swift as the wind”)

[Yui]

If you don't watch out, your love will disappear in front of your eyes before you can tell him your feeling...

Because things become irreparable sometimes...

[Yui]

Just like in my case...

[Kogoro]

Swift as the wind?

[Kogoro]

Heh? If I remember well, this is...

(Comment: Now we will leave Kogoro to remember Japanese history)

Page 13

[Heiji]

That's strange!

That's strange, Kudo!

[Conan]

Yeah...

The gag which was covering...

[Conan / Heiji]

...Ayaka-san's mouth

[Heiji]

They probably put it to prevent her from [shouting]

[Heiji]

If they wanted it to look like a suicide to run from Shingen's curse, they would normally take (the gag) after hanging her...

[Conan]

Which means either they couldn't take it...

[Conan]

Or they put it on purpose...

[Heiji]

But, if it was on purpose, why did the culprit had to do that?

When people die, they don't speak, do they?

[Conan]

Maybe it's a threat towards somebody?

(A threat) which silently says “Keep quiet”...

[Conan / Heiji]

Ummm...

Page 14

HEEEEE---

(Comment: This must be Heiji)

[Heiji]

This is another huge armor!!

[Heiji]

The Red thing here refers to Takeda's red army?

(This is the wiki article for Akazonae (red army) )

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%B5%A4%E5%82%99%E3%81%88

[Tatsuo Tamefumi]

ああ

Yeah

[Conan]

Does this family have any connection to Takeda?

[Tatsuo Tamefumi]

No

Me and my mother are big fans of him...

It costed us a large amount of money!

[Tamefumi]

My late son, Kouji-kun, and Yoshiro-kun from Torada family also liked Shingen, and they used to come here to see it...

[Tamefumi]

However, my other son wasn't like that...

[Conan]

Say, Why do you address Kouji-san with the “-kun” title, but you don't do this with Akira-san, even though both of them are your sons?

(Comment: This has been bothering me too)

[Tamefumi]

Ah...

Kouji-kun is my son-in-law who took our family name, and he was born after Akira...

Page 15

[Tamefumi]

Well, my daughter has passed away in a traffic accident long time ago...

Kouji-san used to come to our house even before their marriage because he was a classmate of Akira, so I continued to address him with “-kun”

Kouji-kun also never addressed Akira with “Niisan” title...

[Tomefumi]

Speaking of classmates, Yoshiro-kun and Shigetsugu-kun from Torada family were also classmates with Akira. Shigetsugu-kun was calling Yoshiro-kun by “-Niisan” title...

[Notice: Niisan originally means “brother”, and therefore it is used by young kids to address their elder brothers]

[Heiji]

Huh?

They were brothers, so that's normal thing, no?

[Tamefumi]

Ah, No...

Yoshiro-kun is the son of elder sister of Naonobu-san, the head of Torada family....

[Tamefumi]

I heard that his sister died with her husband at an early age, and so, (Nanobu-san) took care of him, and thus they were raised as brothers...

[Heiji]

So that means that the 3 people who died were not (directly) related by blood to Torada family nor Tatsuo family...

(Summary: Both of Yoshiro and Kouji were not sons of Naonobu & Tamefumi respectively)

[Tamefumi]

No, they were not

And Ayaka-san was Akira's wife...

[Conan]

Say, the flag [Banner] behind this armor...

[Tamefumi]

Ah... This is just replica...

[Tamefumi's mother]

Can't you read it, Kid?

[Tamefumi]

Swift as the wind, Silent as a forest, Fierce as fire and Immovable as a mountain

(Notice: The text written on the banner is in Old Japanese, and therefore there's no way that Conan can read it, unless he has seen it in TV or history books)

Page 16

[Tamefumi's mother]

This is a strategy [art of war] that was explained by Sun Tzu

(Notice: See the explaination at the beginning of this page)

[Heiji]

S- So that's it! Yoshiro-san's death by a tornado is a refernce to the Wind!!

[Conan]

And Kouji-san's death, in which he was burried like a mountain and beaten to death, is a reference to Mountain!!

[Heiji/Conan]

Ayaka-san's death, in which her mouth was covered, and she was hanged on a tree, it's a reference to the Forest!!

[Tamefumi]

Th- Then could it be...

[Hattori]

Yeah...

This murder is killing like Takeda Shingen...

[Conan]

Using the strategy that (Takeda) liked and used...

[Conan]

The Fuurinkazan, that is!!
