Civil War Links and Resources
Tune:
Battle Hymn of the Republic
This page is very much a work in progress and will be added to over time.
1) Our Pards in Other Reenactment Units - Billy Yanks:
2nd United States Sharpshooters. The Civil War equivalent of Sharpe's
Rifles. It always feels good knowing that these boys in green are watching your flank!
2) Our Pards in Other Reenactment Units - Johnny Rebs:
Longstreet's Corps
- an association of over twenty rebel reenactment units drawn from Alabama,
Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, and Virginia, honoring the memory of Lee's "Old Warhorse", General Longstreet.
6th Texas Infantry, Co. "K" (Alamo Guards) - a fine unit from beautiful and historic Bexar County, San Antonio,
Texas.
18th Mississippi Infantry, Co. "B" (Benton Rifles) - fellow Canadians from St.
Catherine's, Ontario and friends of the 49th. Their website has some good information on Canada in the Civil War.
D Company, 21st Mississippi Volunteer
Infantry. Another fine unit of fellow Canadian living historians, from Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, who have chosen to wear grey - oh well, de gustibus non disputandam est, as someone once said. A friendly group with a great family atmosphere.
3) Historical Research, Books, and Online Resources
The American Civil War Homepage - a vast collection of links to online historical resources for studies of the Civil War, originally begun in 1994 as a project of the School for Information Studies, University of Tennessee.
James River Publications - an excellent source of historical and genealogical books and materials, including regimental histories. Ron Mosocco, the proprietor, is helpful and prompt in his responses.
4) Resources for Living History and Reenacting
Civil War Reenactors' Home Page - run by the estimable Widow Barfield, she of the famed
traveling cookhouse and spoon of doom (subscribe to CW RE-ENACTORS mailing list and you'll learn about the spoon of doom). Good page, good links, good friendly knowledgeable people.
The Rowdy Pards - a website dedicated to progressive, campaign-style reenacting. Lots of good info on this site, maintained by Mike Murley. Mike and his pards do a western Federal impression, so we 49th NY Army of the Potomac types may be too spit and polish paper-collar types for them, but Mike's site has some good things to say about reenacting the BIRD
(Because - It's - Right - Durnit!) way.
Westfield Heritage Village. One of several fine living history sites in SW Ontario, Westfield is the home of the ACWHRS' Graduation event in April and of our annual tactical/living history days in August.
5) Music of the Civil War
The Civil War music page - an indispensable collection of lyrics and midi files, thoughtfully divided into categories (North, South, home front, negro, fife and drum, etc) from a fellow Geocities homesteader.
Haunted Field Music and David
Kincaid. Put simply, David Kincaid's music kicks a**. His album, The Irish Volunteer: Songs of the Irish Union Soldier, is an absolute must for your CD library, and an excellent source of campfire and marching songs.
6) Civil War Photography and Images
Civil War Camera. Retired Air Force Colonel Norman Burzynski brings a historian's passion and a photographer's keen eye to this wonderful collection of reenactment photography.
