The Nancy Hanks

I remember when I was between the ages of five and seven: we had moved to Savannah from Atlanta. Mother really missed shopping in Rich's and Davison's department stores. There was a train called the Nancy Hanks that we would catch early in the morning—it left from the train station in Savannah on West Broad Street and Louisville Road—and ride to Atlanta. Mother and I (I can't remember if Mitzie would go—she may have been too young) would shop until it was time to catch the Nancy Hanks back to Savannah.

We would eat dinner in the dining car of the train. I remember the food was delicious. The tables were set so pretty with white table cloths and white napkins, and there was always a vase of flowers on the table. I loved doing that. It was so exciting and fun. My dad used to pick us up after the day of shopping and drive us home.

Write to us with your memories of Savannah train stations and train travel so that we can consider posting them here.
