Once you have arrived at the gate of Bonaventure
Cemetery, you will immediately see the Cemetery office. Avoid the road to
the far leftthat road takes you to the newer Greenwich Cemetery (where
you can find the grave of Danny Hansford, which
we will discuss later). Notice the large map posted by the office: it shows
where many gravesites of historical interest are located.
The map will show you which road to take to get to the graves of Johnny Mercer (Section H), Conrad Aiken and his parents (Section H), and Gracie (Section E). Also, look for the large directional signpost that has several arrows pointing in the direction of the different sections. From this point, just watch for the smaller directional signposts that point you to specific graves.
It's really very easy; Bonaventure Cemetery has done an excellent job of providing clear, easy-to-follow directional signage. They also provide a wonderful brochure complete with a map of the cemetery's historical sites and loaded with interesting information on historic Savannah figures as well as the history of the site itself (it used to be a plantation). You may want to call ahead to be sure of the days and hours when the office will be open, because you'll definitely want one of the brochures as a keepsake. Please be very respectful of the sacred and very fragile nature of Bonaventure. While many people visit it as a historical site, it is still an active cemetery, meaning that families still have available grave spaces, and funeral services are held not infrequently and should be respected.
