Midnight fans breathe sigh of relief: Berendt feeling "perfectly fine" after mild heart attack
Savannah media outlets and the Associated Press recently reported that John Berendt was admitted to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah on Aug. 30 while on a visit to the city.
"It was an extremely mild heart attack," Berendt told Entertainment Weekly. The magazine reports in its 9/18/98 issue that he was released after four days. (It also notes that Midnight in the Garden... has been on the New York Times best-seller list for 216 weeks.)
Now back home in New York, Berendt told EW: "I had pains on Friday and didn't bother to go to the hospital until Sunday. I feel perfectly fine."
