Kite Aerial Photography

by Michael Schernau

This page is about taking aerial pictures with a kite. I have read an article about this in a model plane magazine decades ago, but had no suitable camera. By chance I got a lightweight point-and-shoot camera, and decided to try it. These pages describe my equipment and show some of my pictures.

There a quite a few web sites about KAP if you search on Yahoo or Google, but my favorite one is certainly the one by Charles C. Benton.

Camera Rig

I began with an Olympus Stylus point-and-shoot film camera and a HiTec remote control for air planes to point the camera and to press the shutter. I have now moved to a digital camera: the Canon S200. The equipment and shooting technique will be described later.

Kite

I made a Rokkaku with fiberglass spars and ripstop nylon from a plan found on the internet. It needs at least 14 km/h winds to lift the camera rig.
