Early Sunday afternoon during August 2000 at the Bucci’s home:

“Thomas Bucci you get down here this instant!” Mrs. Bucci called from the kitchen.

Tommy ran down the steps and into the kitchen. He recognized anger in his mother’s tone when he heard it. “Yes mom?” Tommy asked innocently.

“Whose dirty dishes are these still out on the table? They have been there since we left for Church.” Mrs. Bucci asked pointedly.

“Umm. Brittany’s?” Tommy tried.

“Don’t give me that young man. Whose are they?”

“I guess they are mine, mommy. I’ll clean them up now.”

“Yes you will, young man but I am not finished with you. Whose toys are laying all over the family room floor and in the hallway where someone can trip on them?” Mrs. Bucci asked sternly.

“I was just headed in there to clean them up too, mommy.” Tommy said innocently.

“Don’t fib to me young man. Those toys have been lying there since last evening when Jimmy went home. What is the rule in this house about picking up after yourself?” Mrs. Bucci asked pointedly.

“When you are done using something, put it away.” Tommy answered dejectedly.

“And the rule about dirty dishes?”

“They get rinsed off and put in the dishwasher.”

“So you know the rules, don’t you Thomas?”

“Yes, mommy.”

“And you were warned about your toys just yesterday afternoon. What did I tell you would happen if you left them out again?” Mrs. Bucci asked.

“Aw mom. I’ll go pick them up right now. I forgot that’s all.”

“That is the problem. You forgot. And you are going to pick them up but that is not all. Now, what did I tell you would happen if you left them out again?”

“You told me I would get spanked. But mommy, I don’t want to get spanked. Can’t I just pick them up now? I won’t leave them out again and I’ll put my dishes in the dishwasher too. Please?” Tommy pleaded.

“Yes, you will do all of those things Tommy. You will also get a spanking as punishment for not doing what you are told and to help you to remember to do those things in the future.” Mrs. Bucci decreed.

Just then the telephone rang. Mrs. Bucci answered it. “Hello.”

“Amanda? Hi. It’s Jackie Gallagher, Jimmy’s mom.” Mrs. Jackie Gallagher said over the phone.

“Hi, Jackie. It is good to hear from you. I guess you want to talk about Andrew and Tricia’s escapade last night.” Mrs. Amanda Bucci replied.

“Actually no. Michael spanked Andrew but good last night – I was upstairs and I could hear Andrew crying all the way from the basement, and I understand that Tricia got the same from Steven. As far as I am concerned, that issue is finished. What I want to talk with you about is spanking in general. You see I wasn’t spanked as a child and the spanking that Andrew got last night was the first that any of our children have ever been given. Anyway…I want a woman’s perspective… could we get together and talk about this? I mean, I need some advice…Michael has been after me to start spanking Jimmy and Jimmy probably deserves to be punished sometimes, Danielle too for that matter…It’s just that …”

“Jackie you don’t need to say any more. I would be happy to talk with you. Why don’t we make it over coffee? My house or yours?”

“Oh thank you Amanda. If you don’t mind could I come over to your house? I’ll bring some brownies that I just made.”

“That would be fine. How does 30 minutes from now sound? I’ll make coffee, we can use Steven’s den and chat in private.”

“Great Amanda, I’ll see you in a little bit. Goodbye.”

“See you soon.”

Mrs. Bucci thought to herself that things might get interesting in a little while. She turned to her son. “Tommy, you clean up your dishes and your toys. Then you are to go to your room and wait until I call you for your spanking. That was Jimmy’s mom on the phone. She is coming over to talk with me in a little while. You will get your spanking later.”

“Yes, mommy. I’m sorry mommy.”

When Jackie arrived at the Bucci’s, Amanda welcomed her. The two mothers went directly to the den to talk in private.

Jackie started right in. “Amanda, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me. This is such a difficult subject. Andrew has always been so well behaved; we never had any real problems with him. But Jimmy is such a handful; you probably know that – he spends so much time with your Tommy. Even Danielle has been giving us problems.

“At any rate, Michael wants to spank them when they deserve to be punished. He wants me to do it too because he says he doesn’t want to be the ‘bad guy’ and the kids need to respect me too. I am just so confused; I wasn’t spanked as a child. Michael was and he turned out fine. I agree with him that something needs to be done about Jimmy – groundings and taking away privileges haven’t worked with him. I just don’t know if I could intentionally HURT my own child.

“We agreed that what Andrew and Tricia did last night deserved severe punishment so I let him spank Andrew. I never agreed to it before. Now I don’t know. I think he may be right. I know you spank your kids and Tommy is so much better behaved than Jimmy that I am ashamed. What do you think?”

Amanda answered her, “Jackie – thank you, I think you just gave me a compliment. But don’t be so hard on yourself. Your children are basically good kids too. Look at Andrew, he is a wonderful young man. I am so happy that Tricia and he are such good friends. You obviously are doing something right. Jimmy is a little rambunctious sometimes and frankly if he were my child I would have spanked him on more than one occasion. In fact most of Tommy’s spankings have been over something the two of them have done together. But let’s be honest, if Jimmy was really a BAD influence, there is no way Steven or I would allow Tommy to play with him.”

Jackie looked physically relieved at this last comment and let out the breath that she was holding. “Oh thank you. I was sure you thought that I was a bad parent. I am so sorry Tommy has gotten spanked and Jimmy hasn’t. It doesn’t seem fair does it?”

“No, it isn’t fair. But nothing in life is FAIR. Fairness is not a reason to start spanking your child. Some parents spank and some do not. Steven and I believe in spanking, so we spank. We look at spanking as just one of many tools we have in raising our children. Mostly what we use is love and firm guidance. Sometimes – and in fact it is rare – one of the children does something wrong and deserves to be punished for it. We look at spanking as exactly that, punishment. The child is punished for their misbehavior, the slate is wiped clean, they are forgiven and life goes on. We have found that if a child misbehaves and isn’t punished, guilt sets in and things actually get worse instead of better.” Amanda replied.

“But isn’t spanking child abuse?” Jackie asked.

Amanda said fervently, “Absolutely not! A spanking, even a severe one, when it is given in a loving manner, to a child who has misbehaved, is the farthest thing from abuse there is. Abuse is when you let a child get away with misbehavior and never learn that there is a proper way to behave and to act in a civilized society. Now mind you, I am not talking about beating a child for no reason or burning them with a cigarette or something sick like that. I am talking about a controlled application of temporary pain to the child.”

“You know Amanda, that makes sense. That is what Michael has been saying too.” Jackie said. “I never really looked at it that way. When a child misbehaves, they deserve to be punished. A spanking is just one way of punishing them.”

“That is right. You could choose any number of ways to punish the child and probably should base the punishment on the child and the offense. Sometimes something as simple as a stern look is sufficient. You know that Jackie, I am not really telling you anything new.” Amanda said.

“What is new is that I think Michael is right. We need to start spanking Jimmy and maybe Danielle too. They have both been pushing us too far and I agreed to do my fair share. The problem is that I don’t really know how to go about doing it. I’ve never spanked anyone, I’ve never seen anyone spanked – I mean I’ve heard of it but that is all. I don’t think I could make it hurt either, Michael is no help, he is so much bigger than I am it would be easy for him.” Jackie said

Amanda laughed and cut her off. “I assure you Jackie, size has very little to do with it. Granted if the child is uncooperative being bigger helps but when you are smacking a bare bottom you don’t have to be big to make it sting plenty!”

“Bare? You mean you spank on the bare?” Jackie asked in surprise.

“Absolutely!” Amanda replied. “And for a number of reasons. Obviously, since there is no protection from the smacks, a spanking on the bare bottom hurts more and because of this, it is really more efficient, you don’t have to spank as hard to make it hurt. It is also easier to tell how effective your spanking is – you can’t really tell from how much the child yelps and cries, they become very good actors if they think you will let them off easy based on their crying – you judge the effectiveness of the spanking by the changes in their bottom’s color.”

Jackie interrupted. “But what about their modesty?”

Amanda smiled and said. “Actually, I was just getting to that. Modesty really isn’t the issue – by misbehaving the child gives up all rights to modesty. I think this is very important, especially with an older child. Spanking on the bare bottom sends a message to the child that they are still a CHILD and you are still the parent and that by misbehaving they have lost all sense of being in control. You as the parent are in control. You as the parent will determine how long to spank, how hard to spank, what position to spank in and when to spank. The child has no say in the matter at all. Now I am not advocated public spankings – I think spankings should be private for the most part, although Steven and I know that our kids have ‘peeked’ at their siblings getting spanked before. We think they learn from each other’s mistakes and try to avoid the behavior that got the other spanked. In fact, Andrew and Tricia peeked in on Brittany two nights ago.”

“Andrew watched Brittany get a spanking? On the bare bottom?” Jackie asked in surprise.

“Yes.” Amanda replied. “Don’t worry about it. In fact Andrew was one of the people hurt by Brittany’s misbehavior. But that isn’t the issue right now. What do you think about what I have told you so far?”

“Well, it all really seems to make sense.” Jackie said. “But I still don’t know how to do it. I mean you even mentioned position. I never even thought of position. I am just not sure HOW to spank.”

Amanda looked seriously at Jackie and said. “Jackie, before you think about how to spank, you have to decide whether you are WILLING to spank. You have to decide that your child’s misbehavior warrants punishment and the punishment you decide to mete out is a spanking. Before we go any further, I have to ask you, are you willing to spank?”

Jackie didn’t even hesitate in her reply. “Yes, I am. Michael and I have talked about this repeatedly and I have decided he has been right all along. We are going to spank our children if they deserve it. I will not leave this completely up to Michael. I have got to do my fair share. That means I have to learn how to spank.”

Amanda smiled. “I am glad you made that positive decision. I am sure you will not regret it. I have a proposal for you. I will show you how to spank by letting you watch me spank Tommy. Believe it or not I was just about to spank him when you called this morning. He is upstairs in his room waiting for me now.”

Jackie hesitated before answering. “I am not sure that would be right or fair to Tommy. Wouldn’t he be embarrassed?”

Amanda said, “Don’t worry about that. I actually think he will be secretly happy to find out that you will be spanking Jimmy and that he is helping you learn how to do it correctly! He knows many of his spankings have been because of Jimmy, he will realize that if Jimmy gets spanked too they both might not get into so much trouble!”

“Yes, if you think it is OK, I guess it is a good way to learn how to spank. What will you want me to do?” Jackie asked.

“Nothing in particular. Watch closely, and ask questions if you want. Wait here for a moment, I will go call Tommy in.” Amanda replied matter of factly.

When Tommy walked in the den, he was surprised to see Mrs. Gallagher there but he remembered his manners. “Hello Mrs. Gallagher.”

Jackie was a little flustered and just nodded to Tommy.

Amanda quickly explained why Jackie was there. Jackie cut in and said, “Tommy, I don’t want you to be embarrassed by having me here. If it will upset you to have your mommy show me how to spank by using you as an example, I will leave.”

Tommy had a few questions. “Are you really going to spank Jimmy?”

“Yes, Tommy I am. But I have never spanked anyone before. That is why I have to learn how.”

“Are you going to spank him for the same things I get spanked for?”

“I don’t know for sure Tommy.” Amanda answered honestly. “ I don’t really know what you get spanked for. I can tell you this though, if Jimmy misbehaves and his father or I feel he deserves to be spanked, he will be spanked. Your mommy told me that you have gotten spanked for some things that you and Jimmy did together. I don’t think that is fair. In the future Jimmy will probably get spanked too.”

“Since you are going to watch me get spanked, can I watch you spank Jimmy?” Tommy asked.

Jackie thought for a moment and said. “No, I don’t think that would be right. But if your mother is agreeable she could watch and offer me some advice while I spank Jimmy.”

Tommy got a big smile on his face, turned to his mother and said, “Mom, I’m ready. Show her how to do it good!”

Both Amanda and Jackie laughed. Tommy giggled too but remembered he was still going to get spanked and was a little concerned about how much it would hurt. He figured it wouldn’t be too bad but you never knew.

Amanda quickly got down to business. She sat down on the sofa and stood Tommy in front of her. “Tommy,” she asked, “do you know why you are going to be spanked?”

“Yes, mommy. I know. It is because I disobeyed you and left my toys out. Then this morning I didn’t clear my dishes and I fibbed and tried to blame Brittany.” Tommy knew that with his mother it was best to list his offences and to be honest.

“Well Tommy, you are absolutely right. Good for you for being so honest. Now – put your hands on top of your head and don’t move until I tell you to.” Amanda unbuckled Tommy’s belt, unfastened the button on his jeans, pulled his zipper down and lowered his pants to his ankles. She then lowered his underpants to his knees. “Jackie, if you want to completely remove your child’s pants and underpants you can. Steven always does, he says it makes it easier to spank their inner thighs that way. I usually don’t. Having their pants around their ankles keeps them from kicking so much. It really is your choice. In fact because Brittany always struggles so much I often re-close the fasteners on her pants when they’re down around her ankles to bind her legs even more. I would recommend you try it pants down and pants off and see which way you prefer. Steven and I both like to bare the children ourselves and not let them do it. We think it sends more of the message that we are in control and not the child. Again that is really up to you to decide, you could do it either way.”

Jackie was listening to the instructions and had a question to ask. “Do you ever have the child completely naked or do you just bare their bottom half?”

Amanda replied, “Well I suppose you could have them strip completely naked but I never thought that was necessary. I do think that would step over a line and become a true modesty issue then. But sometimes a child has been naked when they were spanked, that was always because of what they were or weren’t wearing at the time of the offense – for example one piece bathing suits have come completely off as did a gymnastics leotard on one of the girls. Actually I like to have them have a top on for my own convenience, when they wiggle around a lot the shirt gives you something to grab onto to hold them in position. Again though, it is ultimately your choice as the parent, experiment and see which way you prefer.”

Tommy was doing some fidgeting while this conversation was going on. His hands were still on top of his head, his jeans were down around his ankles and his underpants had fallen past his knees and were now also at his ankles. While Amanda was talking she had tucked his shirttail into the neck of his shirt so it was completely out of the way of his bottom. Tommy was now completely bare from the middle of his back to the tops of his ankles. He looked like a very vulnerable little boy, which was exactly what he was.

“OK Tommy, let’s get this spanking started.” Amanda said to her son. “I am not going to spank you any longer or harder than I normally would for your misbehavior but I am going to stop and start again and have you change positions as I explain and show things to Mrs. Gallagher. Do you understand that?”

Tommy had stopped smiling a while ago as he realized the fate that awaited him. The waiting had really gotten to him and he started to sniffle as his mom told him the spanking was about to start. “I understand, mommy. But can’t you just spank me and get it over with and then explain things to Mrs. Gallagher? I’ll even get into whatever positions you want without struggling. Please?”

“You know what Tommy?” Amanda replied. “You are right. I don’t have to stop and start again to show how to do things correctly. Come on now and lie across my lap.”

Amanda sat back a little on the sofa and Tommy got into position over his mom’s lap. “Jackie, some parents like to sit in a straight back chair when they put their children over their lap for a spanking. I don’t really like that as it leaves the child’s arms and legs dangling and puts pressure on their tummy. Notice the way Tommy is well supported here on the sofa. His bottom is propped up over my legs in a perfect position to get swatted yet his upper body and legs are on the sofa and he is well supported. I don’t think there is any reason for the child to be physically uncomfortable during the spanking. I think all of the physical discomfort should come from the sting on their bottom. Notice that he put his hands out in front of him; he knows to keep them out of the way and not to try and protect his bottom. If he did try to cover his bottom I would add additional spanks to the tops of his thighs and I would hold his hands out of the way in the small of his back. In fact, Tommy put your hands behind your back so I can show Mrs. Gallagher what I am talking about.”

Tommy did as he was told and Amanda took hold of his wrists in her left hand and held them in the small of his back out of the way of his bare bottom. Jackie was nodding her understanding as Amanda was explaining her actions. After she was sure that Jackie understood, Amanda let Tommy put his hands back out in front of him as she knew it was more comfortable for him and he wouldn’t struggle.

“I like to make the first spank a really hard one right in the middle of the bottom to make it sting right off and to get the child mentally in tune with the fact that the rest of the spanking is going to hurt. I then continue by applying moderate smacks in a nice steady rhythm. I vary what parts of the bottom I swat as the spanking goes on. I think a good spanking comes from many repetitions of smacks and length of time not from a few very hard power blows.” Amanda matched her actions to her words as she began spanking Tommy. Even though he knew the spank was coming, Tommy couldn’t suppress the cry of pain and surprise as the first spank landed on his bare and upturned little bottom.

After his first outcry, Tommy did a good job of trying not to cry but when about ten smacks had been applied he broke down and started a steady crying, kicking his legs up a little with every smack. To his credit he did no pleading for the spanking to stop and made no empty promises to be good! He took the spanking that he knew he deserved and hoped that Mrs. Gallagher was learning well how to spank Jimmy.

Amanda mostly spanked the very center of Tommy’s bottom but she made sure she covered his entire bottom and tops of Tommy’s thighs. She made a point of showing Jackie not to spank with a flat stiff hand but to cup the hand and to keep a flexible wrist snapping the hand down onto the bottom and striking mostly with the fingers. She explained that this was best with a younger child like Tommy or Jimmy but that older children would need firmer strokes for the spanking to be effective.

As Amanda spanked Tommy she explained to Jackie what she was doing and why. She told her to use the top of the bottom’s crack as a guide and to keep the spanks about one inch below it to protect the child’s back. She explained how certain areas on each child’s bottom hurt more and that she could concentrate spanks there if she wanted. She told her how with Brittany the ‘hurt spot’ was the sides of her bottom and she gave Tommy a few swats there to show her the place. Then she showed her Tricia’s ‘hurt spot’ by swatting Tommy’s upper thighs where the bottom and thighs meet, then she made Tommy spread his legs apart as far as he could with his pants bunched at his ankles and she smacked the inner portion of his near thigh. She explained that she couldn’t hit the inner part of his other thigh because of the bad angle. Then she spread his bottom cheeks apart and gave him a few smacks to the inside portion of his cheeks. This led her into explaining that each spanking position enabling you to spank different parts of the bottom in a different manner. She then gave Tommy a few rapid spanks across both cheeks covering the sit spot of his bottom and ended the spanking.

Amanda let Tommy cry himself out still lying across her lap and she continued to discuss things with Jackie. She showed Jackie the changes in coloring on Tommy’s bottom and how to judge a spanking by how red the bottom was getting. She explained that she could have given a more severe spanking simply by moving more of her smacks lower as it is a more sensitive area on everyone and they would feel the spanking more when they sit down. Jackie mentioned that her husband had spanked Andrew with a belt and that led into a discussion of spanking implements. Amanda told Jackie that she felt that a hand spanking applied to the bare bottom was sufficiently painful in most cases but that if a more severe spanking was called for then a belt or something like a paddle or hairbrush could be used. She explained that some parents believed in the “harder not longer” theory of spanking and would give six of the best with a cane or something similar but that she believed in the “longer not harder” theory. She felt that a spanking should never be “harder and longer” as that could be too brutal and could cross a line into child abuse.

When Tommy finished crying, his mom helped him up and they hugged each other for a while. Amanda told him how much he was loved and that he was punished because they did love him. Tommy said that he knew and that he would try to do a better job of behaving in the future. When Tommy went to pull his pants back up Amanda stopped him and explained that she still needed to show Mrs. Gallagher some different spanking positions.

“Another position that I use is a variation of what you just saw. If the child is struggling too much, I pin their legs down with mine and drape them over my left leg.” Amanda shifted forward on the sofa and had Tommy stand between her legs facing her left thigh. She then bent him right over and pinned him there. “Notice how he can’t kick his legs or roll away. But look at how I can’t really spank the tops of his thighs or his inner thighs because my leg is covering them. His bottom is also bent at a much greater angle then it was so the inner areas of his cheeks will get spanked without having to spread his cheeks apart. Because of the angle his skin is stretched rather tight and there isn’t much bounce to the bottom. I also think it puts too much pressure on the tummy, I don’t really like to use this position if I don’t have to.”

Amanda let Tommy stand up but to his surprise had him take his pants and underpants off leaving him completely bare from the waist down. “Steven’s favorite position to spank the children in is like this. It really is quite effective. The child’s pants have to be completely removed or else they get in the way.” She had Tommy stand between her legs facing her. Amanda then bent Tommy over her left upper thigh putting his head behind her and to the side. She then wrapped her right leg over the back of his left leg and her left leg over the back of his right leg. Tommy’s chest was supported on the sofa but his bottom was still well bent over. “This really is a good position. Notice how conveniently his bottom is positioned to get swatted, he can’t kick or roll away and all parts of his bottom and thighs are easily accessible for spanking.”

Jackie was quite intrigued with that position as she could see its merits. But Amanda wasn’t finished yet. She let Tommy stand up and led him over to the back of the lounge chair and made him bend over it. “Tommy isn’t quite big enough to use the back of the chair but I want to show you its uses anyway. You see how he is really only leaning over the chair and his bottom isn’t bent at all? That is because he is too short; an older child’s bottom would be bent and nicely positioned. Bent over the back of the chair is useful for more severe spankings, you can get a better swing and can use a paddle or the belt – you really can’t use those things with the child over your knee. Instead of the back of the chair, place someone Tommy’s or Jimmy’s size over the arm of the chair.”

Amanda made Tommy stand up and then demonstrate bending over the arm of the lounge chair. “Notice how his bottom is nicely bent and his upper body is supported by the chair? This is a very useful position for a severe spanking. I want you to see one more useful thing.” Amanda made Tommy spread his legs about shoulder width apart and had him point his toes inward. She explained how this exposed the very sensitive underneath and middle parts of the bottom. She emphasized how spanking in that region would make quite an impression on the child but cautioned that you had to be careful not to accidentally strike the genitalia as they would be somewhat vulnerable.

Tommy was smiling again, even though he was bent over the arm of the chair, and he giggled at his mother’s last remarks.

“All right, young man. You can get up and get dressed now.” Amanda said, smiling herself and giving Tommy’s bottom a couple of love pats.

“Tommy,” Jackie said. “I want to thank you for letting me watch. It was very helpful to me. Although I’m sure Jimmy’s bottom won’t like it when he gets spanked.” Jackie was also smiling.

“You’re welcome, Mrs. Gallagher. Only do me a favor. Please don’t tell Jimmy you learned anything from me. He is still my best friend you know.” Tommy said.

Amanda helped Tommy fix his shirt and they hugged again after Tommy was dressed. When Tommy left the den, Jackie thanked Amanda. “Amanda I can’t thank you enough for what you showed me today. It will be very helpful when I have to put it to use. Michael and I already warned the children this morning that any future misbehavior may be dealt with by a spanking and the way Jimmy and Danielle have been acting I am sure it won’t be long before I have to apply what I learned today.”

“Oh Jackie, think nothing of it. I am very happy to help. Don’t forget that I will come over and give you some on the scene advice when it comes time to spank Jimmy. By the way, why don’t you all come over for supper this evening? I am sure Michael and Steven have things to talk about, you and I still do and I’ll bet the children will want to compare notes.” Amanda said as she was showing Jackie out the door.

“We’d love too. I’ll call you after I get home and talk with Michael. You can tell me then what I should bring”

After Jackie left, Amanda was talking with Steven. He made the observation that it was a very busy weekend for spankings. Brittany had gotten spanked Friday night, Tricia had gotten a very serious spanking early Sunday morning and Tommy had gotten spanked Sunday afternoon. All that needed to happen was for Katie to get spanked sometime later today and all four kids would have gotten spanked on different times on the same weekend. That would be a first for the family.
