| The stories of Brer Rabbit are wonderful folktales that have been passed down from generation to generation through the oral tradition. He plays the trickster figure in his stories, which can be an advantage or disadvantage to him. He is cunning and witty, but that can get him into trouble, as seen in "The Wonderful Tar-Baby Story." His arrogance is his flaw. Brer Rabbit's stories can be traced to the tales of Anansi the Spider and Zomo the Hare. They were both tricksters in Africa and their stories were brought over by captured Africans who were bought into slavery. The stories live on even today in the forms of children's books, Walt Disney's controversial film Song of the South, Disney's Splash Mountian, and in the unlikely place of a molasses label. |
