Welcome to the McNelis Home Page!
Hi! Thanks for stopping by the McNelis Home page. It's not much to look at yet, though I hope that you find something useful here, or least have fun surfing the Web in general. If you have information on McNelis' that you'd like me to add, please email me... (there's even some chance I'll have time to do so! ;-) If you're simply randomly surfing, then you may wish to try Yahoo's Random Site |
The following information is from
The McNelis Genealogy Home Page:
The name McNelis is derived from the Irish MacNiallghuis and means "son of Niallus" which in turn means "champion choice." Woulfe, in his book on Irish surnames, lists Niallghuis as one of the oldest class of people's names in Ireland, where the first name was a combination of two words. From this base, at some time people found permanent surnames to be useful and often they chose an ancestor for their surname. The Mac or O at the front of these names made the ancestor's name into a surname. The name McNelis is peculiar to Donegal, Ireland; and in fact only common in the area around Kilcar, with the exception of a group in Tyrone. The name is sometimes translated McNellis or Manelis.
The information on Ardara (County Donegal, Ireland) McNelis', of which your webhost is a member, is found here. In fact, the information about your WebHost's specific branch, is found on the Bracky McNelis page.
Speaking of Ireland, I like this Irish Blessing.
