The  2004  Miss  Universe competiton has started! Maricar arrives in Quito, Ecuador for three weeks of pre-pageant activities leading to the Finals Night on June 1st. Will all her hardwork pay off? Will she become the Philippines' 3rd  Miss Universe? The show has began and the future can only get better!

Maricar   Balagtas   enjoys  a  free moment  during  a break in pageant rehearsals  (right  and below).  The very photogenic Miss Philippines is in  true  fighting form; well dressed, never   caught   in   an   unguarded moment,  and  always with a smile!
What are her chances in getting into the select group of finalists? Pageant critics  are  one  in their opinion that Maricar has a strong chance to make it.  As  has  been  mentioned before, she is clearly not a favorite. Advan-tage or disadvantage? On the bright-er  side,  the  pressure  is off, giving
her   more  chances  to  be  herself! Nevetheless, Maricar has blossomed into  a  strong  contender; prompting many  a  pageant expert to name her the  'Best of Asia.'  Come  June 1st, destiny  will  vindicate our lass from the  small  town  of  Plaridel  in  the Philippines. What do you say? I can almost hear it now : "The next name on  my  list  is ... Miss  Philippines!"
Oh yes, that would be the day! Yes, Maricar, prove your critics wrong!"
