MARCONI AVOID NSL CHOP 21/10/02
The final figures in the resolution to end Marconi's NSL tradition was

For 216
Against 920

This was the largest margin in any resolution put to the meeting yesterday.

It was an emphatic show of support for NSL football, and I would like to thank everybody who made the time to come to the AGM and vote.

It was pleasing to see the number of people who attended, purely to vote against this motion, and indeed spoke passionately.

It was also pleasing to see the number of directors/and aspirants who publicly stated their support for football to the meeting, although a cynic would say that some of them did so out of polical expediency, and were much less supportive prior to the SOS media campaign, which exposed this resolution.

All in all, a pleasing result, however, the events of the past 10 days or so have left us with a few lessons learnt.

1. The soccer supporters united, are a voice that any Marconi board will be forced to pay heed to - we proved it at the AGM yesterday, whereas in the past, we have been largely ignored, partly because we have not organised ourselves properly.
This we did to a degree, yesterday.

2. We need to unite to ensure that there is a sprinkling of "soccer oriented" people on the Board next year.
(You would be surprised at the politicking that precedes a Marconi election!)

3. And most importantly, do NOT become complacent after this result. Already, rumours of a much more 'subtle' attempt to wrest control of the soccer club away from the members control have surfaced, and it may well be that we are called to act in the not too distant future.

Once again thank you to everyone who took the trouble to vote at the AGM..and I urge you all, to become members of Club Marconi, to ensure that next AGM or Special General Meeting, you are eligible to vote.

A 'social' memberships costs $15 a year, and that is a small price to pay to have your say.

As I say, don't become complacent, ensure that our voice is heard and that the Marconi Stallions remain 100% owned by the Club Marconi members (ie you and me).

Regards to Forza Fred (Fred Legget) for writing this report on the AGM.
