They all spun around to face the door. Mick faltered for a single second, but that second was all it took. Selena lunged at him, knocking him into a coffee table. He fell over, crashing to the floor. The gun flew out of his hand, and across the hardwood floor. Michelle bent over, grabbed the gun and levelled it at Mick. He sat up, fear in his eyes.
"I killed you once, Mick, I can do it again." Michelle said coolly, evenly. She glanced at Danny. He was staring at her, an unreadble expression on his face. Well- unreadable to everyone but Michelle. She knew that look before-the same torn, confused look he had worn the day he found out that she was the one responsible for Mick's death. He loved this woman standing in front of him- but that man that she held a gun to was his brother. He couldn't choose between the two of them, and he couldn't stand there and watch Michelle shoot Mick, either. He closed his eyes, willing the sight before him to disappear. When he opened them, he wasn't incredibly surprised to see that nothing had changed.
He turned to walk out the door, unwilling to see what was happening before him. It was bad enough knowing that Michelle had killed Mick the first time- but to have to watch it happen again was asking too much. His head hurt, and he needed a drink.
A figure stood in the doorway, with the classic trenchcoat and fedora of the old-time detective movies. "Danny Santos?" he heard a voice say.
He swallowed. "Yeah." What had he done recently to warrant this visit? The last time he checked, he was off the hook for any of the illegal nonsense in the business.
"That your brother Mick?" The figure motioned to Mick, lying on the floor, anxiously glancing from Michelle to the figure in the doorway.
"Uh-huh" Danny nodded. What the hell was going on here? And why did he recognize that voice?
The figure looked up, light illuminating his face. Danny took a step back, shocked.
