Parts 46-47

“You promise?” “Yes and I also promise to love you and cherish you…hey, wait a minute.” Danny sits up, pulling me with him. “What?” “Let’s get married.” “We are married.” “No, I mean let’s have a huge wedding. You can invite all your family and friends.” “Danny, I don’t need that. I have what’s important; you, Andrew and this baby.” “Is it because you’ve already had a big wedding?” “Absolutely not. I just don’t think a big wedding is necessary. Besides, I would want to wait until the mission was completed anyway and at that time I could be 7 months pregnant.” I get up, put my robe on, and head for the bathroom. Danny’s right behind me. “What mission?” “The plan to legalize the business.” I wash my hands and put toothpaste on my toothbrush. “What are you talking about?” he says wrapping his towel back around his waist. “You know what? Never mind. Dinner was good wasn’t it? That Olga needs her own cooking show and how about Jimmy keeping an eye on it so it didn’t’ burn?” “Don’t change the subject, Michelle. Exactly what is it that you think you know?” “Well, if I tell you, it might put me in danger.” “Michelle…” I put my toothbrush down and lead Danny back into the bedroom. We sit down next to each other on the bed. I playfully say, “Alright. Alright. You and your mother seem to forget that before I was married to the mob, I was married to the mob. I know how it works. And I know that you and Carmen are trying to legalize the business. That’s why you’ve increased security.” Danny is not satisfied and does not find my statement humorous. “And…come on Michelle. Out with it.” I hesitate, but continue anyway. “The other families may oppose the Santos’ going legit. Therefore, until it’s a done deal, everyone must be protected. We are all targets. And Andrew and myself are probably the biggest targets. I know you are trying to have this done before I start showing, too. But if it is not, I will have to stay here as a prisoner until the baby is born. Does that about sum it up?” “Are you afraid?” “A little. Are you?” “Most definitely. And that’s why I don’t want you knowing anything, but apparently you already figured out a lot on your own. Look, I want you to concentrate on staying healthy for our baby. Let me concentrate on keeping the family safe and the mission as you call it.” “I will. And I promise not to ask any more questions about Pilar and Colin. Speaking of our baby, I would like Rick and Abby to be the God-parents.” “That’s fine with me,” he says and gives me a quick peck on the cheek before I head back into the bathroom. “And I would like Ray and Kathleen to be Andrew’s God-parents,” I say as I disappear into the bathroom. When Danny doesn’t answer, I go back into the bedroom, brushing my teeth. He’s on the telephone. I’ll just tell him when he’s done. After my shower, I come out to the bedroom and Danny’s still on the telephone. I put my wet curls in a ponytail and get dressed. I get Danny’s attention and motion that I’m going downstairs. He blows me a kiss before I leave.

I find Kathleen and Ray in the family room with Andrew playing Monopoly. I join in and soon Danny comes downstairs. He decides to play as well. Andrew is our banker. He loves money. I don’t have to wonder where he gets that trait.

After a couple of hours of Monopoly, karaoke, and charades, I put Andrew to bed. I know Kathleen and Ray need some time alone, so I ask Jimmy to keep an eye on Andrew’s room. Danny makes some popcorn and we retire to our bedroom to watch a movie.

There’s a knock at the door and I get up to see who it is. It’s Carmen.

“Hello Michelle. May come in? I need to talk to you and Danny.”

“Sure. Danny, it’s your mother.”

Danny gets off the bed and joins Carmen and me at the little breakfast table in our bedroom. She opens her attaché and pulls out some papers. I recognize some to be legal documents.

“What’s going on?” Danny asks his mother as he looks over the documents.

“Everything will be finalized once you and Michelle sign these papers.”

“Mama, you were able to get all this done in one week?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

I start to look over some of them as well and only understand one for sure...Deed of Trust. Carmen has both our attentions now.

“I told Colin that unless he got the other families to agree to let us leave the business, that I would tell them and the FBI exactly who he is and whom and what he’s involved with.”

“Excuse me? We know who Colin is. He’s my old college roommate and a doctor who happens to have all the right connections.”

It’s weird to see my husband not knowing and not having control.

“No, son. You think you know who he is. Colin Beckett is a FBI agent.”

“What? That doesn’t make sense. All the dirty work he did for us.”

“Exactly. And he never got caught. Nothing could ever be traced back to him. Why not? Because he was in the bed with both the FBI and the mob. Playing them against one another. And yes, lot’s of people have the same ability. But there’s one thing he didn’t count on. He never thought anyone would find out his biggest secret. And it’s the only thing I could bring him down with.”

I’m so intrigued now and hanging on her every word. “What’s his secret?” I ask.

“Michelle, you’re his secret. You’re his sister.”
