Road Trip Fic
By Sonja
The last few weeks had been filled with family and friends visiting for the Graduation Ceremony. They were all gone now, and Michelle had suggested that maybe they could rent a car and hit the road for a few days. This is the story...
-----------------------
They were still grabbing things as they went out the door.
"Michelle, if you forget something we can always buy it on the road. Let's go"
The cab that was taking them to the rental agency was blowing his horn.
"Were coming," he yelled to the burly cigar smoking man.
Arriving at the rental agency ten minutes and two red lights later. They were surprised to learn there were no cars left to rent.
"What do you mean, there are no cars left, My wife made the reservation two days ago."
"I am sorry Mr. Santos, but a convention in town shortened our supply. If you and Mrs. Santos could wait" he clicked a few keys on his terminal "looks like about 2 to 3 hours before another one is ready"
"Listen Mr. Dunn, We just survived the trip from hell with a cigar smoking cab driver bent on suicide. I don't think we will wait." His words broke off as another man stepped through the doors jiggling a set of keys at the manager.
"Hey Bob, just got my car back from the shop. Thanks again she was a dream." Tossing the keys to him.
Bob glanced over to them with a questioning look "Mr. Santos, would you be interested in renting an older car"
Putting her sunshades on she looked over at him driving "Oh Danny this is so great, quit sulking and enjoy it" she said as her hair blew in the breeze "This car is a dream, look at what great shape it's in."
"Michelle I don't know how I let you talk me into this"
"It's a convertible Cadillac Coupe DeVille" she giggled at his expression "and that it happens to be two tone pink and white just adds to it's charm don't you think" turning so he couldn't see the tears forming in her eyes.
"I have never in my life."
"That's just it Danny you have never" she leaned over and whispered "Live a little with me today, and I will with you tonight big guy" nibbling on his ear
"Oh Baby...promises, promises, now break out that map and tell me which direction we should be going"
She told him to head towards Interstate 95 south. The on ramp should be up ahead then laid her head back to soak up the sun.
She had thrown her legs up on the dash, moving her feet to the tune on the radio. They had put the top down and were laughing together as people passed them staring at the car. He scowled at most of them, looking over at her legs. Swearing up and down it wasn't the car they were looking at. She just blew him a kiss and continued to enjoy the sun.
They were driving down Interstate 95 in North Carolina when she began to notice all the colorful signs proclaiming "PEDRO'S SOUTH OF THE BORDER" each sign with a different caption to come on down just over the border in South Carolina and join Pedro and the gang.
Giggling she told Danny that they just had to stop. He of course was reluctant, and she set out to persuade him the best she knew how. Thirty minutes later they had reached their destination. He stood looking at the place with a look of total disbelief.
While Michelle was bouncing around ohhing and ahhing over the décor and colorfulness of the place. The great building in the center of the place was a giant sombrero; there were all sorts of shops and a small amusement park. He could only describe it as a tourist trap.
The souvenir shop she said, was their first stop "I just have to buy some gifts for everyone" and buy she did. She bought five T-shirts that said "Pedros South of the Border where the Taco meets the plate" some refrigerator magnets with Pedro himself smiling from beneath his sombrero. She bought his mother a pen and holder in the shape of a Jalapeno` that said "Your one hot mama" when you pulled it out to use. She even bought a book for Dietz entitled "The 10 words to listen for if your boss starts speaking Spanish in front of you and you're the only one in the room with her."
Danny found himself caught up in her joy at this simple place. They spent the whole afternoon eating burritos, cotton candy, riding rides and enjoying each other's company.
They hit the Interstate well into the evening headed south again. She had to use a flashlight to look at the map, telling him to stay on 95 all the way into Savannah.
It was past midnight when they finally arrived and stopped at "Corky's Bed and Breakfast" a nice little Inn secluded and off the beaten path. They spent a wonderful night in that four poster bed with Michelle showing Danny how to live a little more.
But all too soon it was over and real life intruded. The trip back was uneventful; the car had been a dream. They hated to go back, it had been nice to get away for awhile.
But one surprise did come out of the whole "Road Trip" a little girl who is the apple of her daddy's eye was born nine months later.
Her name is Savannah Santos and she just loves to eat burritos.
