Yesterday's Tears

Part Seventeen

Pilar was worried. She didnt know if she was going to be able to talk herself out of this one. Danny was usually stupid enough that she could expain away anything but this time she had done it.

She had tried to buy pills from an undercover agent and was rewarded with a set of sterling silver handcuffs for her effort. How in the world was she going to get out of this? Danny would kick her out of the house for sure and she needed his ATM card too much to risk being thrown out.

She hoped that stupid Sarah had told Danny to come and get her. She would feign innocence and let the family mouthpiece earn his salary and get her out of this. She would have to be more careful about who she solicited next time.

The lady in the cell with her was beginning to scare her. She had been brought in for prostitution. She had tried to trade her body for drugs. Pilar looked at her and wondered who in God's name would be so desperate to have sex with her? She smelled bad and was missing some of her teeth. Some people just had no class, she thought as she turned her back on the other woman.

What the hell was taking him so long? True, he didnt get around like he used to since he became a gimp but he should have been here by now. Had Michelle kept him too busy in bed last night? That was probably a hoot. He could barely walk, how in the world was he going to keep her satisfied although she wasnt exactly a sex kitten herself.

It was probably very sweet what they shared. Gag, she thought she was going to be sick. Those two deserve each other. She would just assume he write her her part of the inheritance and she could be on her merry way. Away from Springfield, away from them and away from her memories.

At least Michelle would be taking care of him now. He had a terrible habit of waking up in the middle of the night in pain and needed help. She usually put the pillow over her head so she didnt have to hear his crybabying. She had had enough of that when he was in the hospital. Michelle could change his disgusting bandages from now on. She was officially in retirement from the freak squad.

She heard Danny's voice out in the lobby. Good gracious, he took his time. He had Michelle with him. Great. Let her see her in all her glory. Oh well, time to pinch the cheeks and turn on the waterworks. Danny really was a sap, she thought to herself and waited for him to come down the hall.

Danny finished posting the bond and signed all the necessary paperwork. Since this was Pilar's first offense, she was being released into his custody until the hearing. He looked at the police report that had been filed. Solicitation to buy a controlled substance, it had read. Pilar had attempted to buy pills from an undercover officer.

Was there a mistake? Not Pilar. What had she been thinking? Did she know how badly she had screwed up?

He put his arm around Michelle for support. He had tried to jump out of the bed so fast when Sarah had told him the news that he had hurt his hip. It was extrememly painful for him to even walk right now and he had had to bring the blasted cane with him and use it for support. Michelle put her arm around him and placed her head against his shoulder in a gesture of support. Michelle hadnt said anything since they had gotten the call. She must have sensed that he needed time to think about what to do.

Michelle watched Danny as he struggled to stand and sign the papers. She was going to suggest he sit down but she didnt want to embarass him. He was so proud, her Danny. Her heart swelled with love at how brave he was. He had shot out of bed so quickly that she was sure he had done some major damage to his already painful hip. He had waved away her attempt to help him up. He had gotten dressed but the pain etched on his face was evidence of the damage that had been done in his haste to help Pilar.

Michelle smelled a rat. What had Pilar done? Pilar was definately not the same sweet girl she was when Michelle had left for Oregon. Something had changed within her. She had an evil aura about her now. Michelle didnt think that Danny could see that. He was only rembering the sister who had stuck with him through his injuries.

Michelle would not tell Danny what Pilar had admitted to doing in keeping them apart after his accident. She was not going to do anything to hurt Danny even though he probably should know what she had done. Michelle would concede this round to Pilar but she would put her on notice that if Danny got hurt, she would be held responsible.

About damn time, Pilar thought when she finally saw Danny coming down the hall. He walked with the guard and was standing outside the bars waiting for the guard to open the cell. Pilar rushed out of the cell so fast she nearly knocked Danny over. Only MIchelle's quick thinking saved Danny from being injured again.

Michelle watched Pilar as she began to wail. She was sobbing uncontrollably and telling Danny how awful it had been. She didnt do anything, she said. The undercover cop had tried to hit on her and when she refused, he arrested her on some phony drug charges.

Pilar was giving her best performance ever and it was all she could do to keep from cracking up. Danny was buying her whole story. She had known he would. Now all she wanted to do was get home. She thought she remembered where she had hid some pills in her room. She needed them so badly.

"Danny, I was so scared" she pouted. " I want to go home" she pouted.

"Hold on peanut, we're going" he said. He turned to Michelle and gave her the keys and asked if she would get the car and pull it around.

Michelle kissed him on the cheek and went to do as he asked. She couldnt shake the feeling that something wasn't as it should be here. She was going to find out what had happened to Pilar while she had been away. She wanted to know what had turned a sweet young lady that she had considered a close friend into a conniving bitter young lady. She owed it to Danny and she owed it to Pilar to find out what had happened.
