Inter-Ac Champs Once Again!
The day had finally come, Saturday May 21, the day of the 2005 Inter-Ac Championships held at Penn Charter. Like last year, the Friars knew it would be a close battle, but this year the odds appeared lower. With Penn Charter blowing every team out in dual meets this year and Germantown defeating Malvern, the Friars knew they had to perform to their full potential to have a shot. Every point was valuable, as seen in last year's 2 point victory. The day started off with the field events. There were only three events in the meet which Malvern did not score, and those were all in the field. Ed Bonsall just missed scoring in the Shot Put finishing in 6th place, there were no top 5 finishers in the Triple Jump, and with no Don Pearse, nothing was scored in Pole Vault as well. Malvern knew this would really hurt them with Penn Charter and GA scoring in all of these. Trey Womack placed 4th in the Long Jump and tied for 2nd in the High Jump, but the story of the day was T.J. Novino. Saturday was his first day jumping after missing the previous three weeks from his near-fatal car crash. Just getting clearance from his doctor to jump the day before, T.J. jumped a PR 6-4 to win the High Jump. Malvern was in 4th place after all the field events were complete.

Then came the track events, Malvern's strength. The first event was the 1600, where Matt Parsons ran a PR 4:41 to take 5th. After a few semi-finals came the 110 High Hurdles finals, where Elliot Whaley finished in 2nd. In the 400, Elliot Whaley ran out of the slow heat and won his heat in 51.7, which eventually got him 4th place overall. The next event was one of the most important on the day, the 100 meter dash. Malvern had 3 runners in the final heat, and Penn Charter had Kamal Marrell, the two time defending champion who had never lost the event in the Inter-Ac. But Junior Trey Womack, in his first year eligible to compete in the Inter-Ac, gave Kamal a taste of 2nd place for once, defeating Kamal by 0.02 seconds in a lean. Dan DiGiovanni took third, followed by freshman Tom McGarrigle in 5th. In the 300 Intermediate Hurdles, the almost dead Elliot Whaley hung on for 2nd narrowly defeating a threatening Penn Charter hurdler. Then came the 3200 meter run, starring the top 4 finishers from Cross Country championships. Packy McCormick from Episcopal was the defending Inter-Ac Champion, and had never lost to a Malvern runner in track in his high school career. Junior Brian Duffy, the defending Cross Country champ, took the first 1600 easy in 4:55, then surged past Packy on the 6th lap and ran away with the victory from there, clocking a 9:48 for a negative split second 1600 in 4:53, and just 6 seconds off the Inter-Ac Championship record of 9:42. Paul Winterhalter finished 4th in 10:18 as well. In the following event, freshman Brian Fulton ran in the 800. On Thursday at trials, he had dropped his PR from 2:05.2 to 2:02.0, and was seeded 5th and looking for another PR. He got just that, but in dramatic fashion. The freshman made a mistake blazing out of the start way ahead of the field at the 200 mark. He held the lead through the first 400 where he came in at 57-58. With a 100 to go, Fulton had dropped to nearly 4th place, but pulled off a courageous finish, picking up his pace and passing the CHA guy who had just passed him. Fulton pulled off a totally unexpected second place in a PR time of 2:00.92. Then came the 200, which turned out to be the deciding race of the meet. Malvern qualified 3 runners for finals, the same 3 as the 100. At this point, the meet had come down to Penn Charter and Malvern Prep. Penn Charter was leading by a score of 46 to 44.5 with just the 200 and 4x400 relay remaining. Penn Charter had one guy in the 200. With the three Malvern runners originally seeded 2nd, 3rd, and 7th, three in the Top 5 would be of great benefit. The Friars got more than they had ever expected, with Dan DiGiovanni, the defending Inter-Ac Champion, crossing the line first in 22.70, followed closely by Trey Womack in 22.95 for 2nd. Battling for third was Tom McGarrigle and PC's runner who were neck and neck, but the freshman pulled out an unbelievable race coming in third in 23.40, making the Malvern crowd go absolutely crazy. With that performance, the Friars had just sealed their second consecutive Inter-Ac Championship. For a team who hadn't won a championship since 1967 until last year, that's pretty impressive. Malvern only finished 5th in the 4x400, but the taste of victory was already in their mouthes. Congratulations to the 2005 Track Inter-Ac Champions!

Malvern Over EA
In the final dual meet of the season, the top two teams from 2004, Malvern and EA dualed it out at Villa. In 2004, the teams met for the last race of the season as well, and it resulted in a tie. This one wasn't as close, as the Friars won comfortably 69-53, finishing their season with a record of 5-1. The meet was highlighted by some exceptional performances. Trey Womack and Dan DiGiovanni went 1-2 in the 100, both clocking an 11.1. Dan DiGiovanni also won the 200, in a PR time of 22.4, breaking his old PR by 0.6 seconds. Elliot Whaley took 2nd achieving his own best time, a 22.8. Elliot also won the 110HH in one of his best times, a 14.5. Brian Fulton won the 800 tieing his PR of 2:05.2 and Matt Parsons won the 1600, dropping 8 seconds off his season best for a 4:44. Ed Bonsall won the shot put throwing a career far 45-6. Paul Winterhalter dropped 14 seconds to finish the 3200 in a 10:06, for third place. Also, Don Pearse won the Pole Vault clearing 11-6. The team looks to be coming around at the right time with champs less than two weeks away. Champs will be even closer than last year, meaning EVERY point counts.
