This is a very funny movie. At least worth a rental when it comes out on DVD next month. You know what's fun? Explaining what Bubba Ho-tep is about and then watching the reaction on people's faces. So here it goes. The movie that takes place in a nursing home, where Elvis Presley (Campbell) ends up after a scheme to live a normal life goes wrong. His life becomes a little too normal and he ends up alone in a nursing home where no one believes he is actually the King of Rock and Roll. As one might expect, the nursing home is attacked by a soul-sucking mummy, named Bubba Ho-tep. Obviously. Elvis teams up with Jack Kennedy, who has been dyed to look like a black man and sent to the nursing home also. For some reason JFK has vast knowledge about the undead and the two old fogies pit themselves against the monster. It's really light comedy. You'll laugh out loud, scratch your head...I think it was just nice to see something different with some thought put into it. This movie is a good example of how special effects and a huge budget aren't necessary to entertain. Just some originality and two great personalities is all that was needed to make this entertaining movie! And as an added bonus, the movie is actually about something. It has a theme. It's about how sad old age is and how two men, once virtual kings of their time, were reduced to being patronized like children by old age. Throughout the movie, telling others that the mummy is killing old folks isn't even an option. No one believes anything the two old cooks say, and no one cares because people die every day at the old folks home anyway! Everything they say, and even the way they dress is pitifully funny, especially when you realize what they once were. Elvis, JFK and the mummy were powerful people, once upon a time, until old age reduced them to pathetic feebs, completely unthreatening to everyone except each other. It makes for hilarious situations, but also makes you think about the elderly in a more compassionate light. It's everything I like: Weird, funny and thematically driven. This movie gets a Jack!
