What do cichlids eat?

Cichlids can be categorized into 4 groups, each with unique dietary needs:

1) Carniverous
These fish prey on other fish and/or  fry of other species.

2) Herbivorous
These fish are grazers they subsist by scraping algae off of rocks.

3) Omniverous
These fish are eating both plant matter, inverebrates, and small fish/fry.

4) Micro-predators
These fish eat small invertebrates such as daphnia, plankton and artemia.

Many Cichlid foods are good and appropriate for all Cichlids, be they carniverous or herbivorous. You want to watch out for are foods high in fat. like the meat of warm-blooded animals. .Also very important is that you don't feed them the same thing day in, day out. I feed my cichlids with pallet food, flake food, daphnia,Krill,Artemia, cyclops and mysis. You also won't want to eat the same thing every day!
