The dance room had a good, well used traditional wood
floor and the barre was worn smooth to the touch by decades of
dancers' discipline throughout the years. Funny how leotards
haven't changed much over the years. They were truly necessary
'evils' to be worn during such hard work; never catching or
tugging on the cool wood, or snagging to cause a misplacement of
arms, hips, back, legs, thighs, or feet upon the barre. She was
tiny and rumoured to be close to seventy years old, but she had
the body and flexibility of a teenager. In fact, she was in much
better condition than all of the students in her class and her
figure, demeanor, and posture was much better than anyone who had
ever been in that room throughout the forty-plus years she had
taught there. She was also the best dancer in that room, on the
cool wooden floor, and had always been the best dancer there as
well. Once in a while, but rarely, yes, once in a while a child
would really love the dance more than anything in the world, and
would rush to class after school, in order to be there hopefully
in time, to catch the best dancer that had ever been in that
room, yes, rush to dance class, to hopefully see the instructor
dance a little. Once in a while, a child would love the dance so
much, and be so devoted to it, that they fully intended to devote
their life to its cruel demands, but, oh, just to see and pray
that someday, with years of work, that someday, they too might be
able to dance as did the instructor, the best dancer in the
world. She had to be an angel and needed wings stronger than
anyones' imagination in order to be able to fly as she did, and
then forevermore, fly while dancing in the child's dreams. She
was stronger than anyone could possibly be and she soared at
least three times a week when the child could run there fast
enough after school, and if weather permitted, the devotee would
arrive in time to see the best dancer in the world, in that small
room, in that small town, and once in a while, oh, yes, once in a
while, someone else would arrive just as did the child, and
recognize that there indeed was a great artist within that room
with the cool floor and smooth barre; yes, an artist who happened
to be the best dancer in the world and who was sixty-seven years
old and never did that ever stop the angel's flight. She dances
forevermore as the very best dancers do, so few in a lifetime,
within dreams that are so powerful they are never forgotten by
the child who sees her whipping around upon the smooth floor to
this day.

OUR CELTIC MUSIC ROOTS from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, and America
In Memory of Chet Atkins: 1924-2001 'Chester Burton Atkins' died after beating cancer for decades, Saturday, 30 June, 2001. Services were held in Nashville, Tennessee, Tuesday, 03 July, 2001 at Ryman Auditorium. Godspeed to a great artist who will continue to contribute his guitar art and innovations throughout time.
Angelenos and others fondly remember, and celebrate the life of actor and Los Angeles resident, Jack Lemmon who also died this past week, 27 June, 2001. Jack Lemmon was a great pianist and performer who will laughingly be remembered by many as the bass slapping/cross-dressing jazz musician on the lam from gangsters after having witnessed the Saint Valentines' Day Massacre in the classic movie, SOME LIKE it HOT. I will always love and happily remember him in that performance because when I was in elementary school in Riverside, California, my entire class, including my teacher, Ms. Vivian Pace, was taken to a birthday party showing of this movie and a great time was had by all. It was a party I will never forget due to the personal connection that my mother worked with Marilyn Monroe and Bob Mitchum at Rheem Aircraft/Douglass Aircraft before serving active duty during WWII as well as attehding Geller's Actor's Studio with Mitchum at war's end. I will always be grateful to Mr. Lemmon and Ms. Monroe for such a great time and such a great movie. It is one of my favorite movies, and I will continue to enjoy it at whim with my mind's eye for the rest of my life. Adios, Amigoes, Amigas...Yay! Rustic Lane Elementary School and Fox Theaters: Thanks again. P.S.(Thinking of you and I love you, oh, so much) I still love my 'blue teddy' more than words may ever express. xoxoxoxoxoxo...M.
