Markers in breast cancer

AP-2 gamma

Other name(s)

ERF-1 (McPherson L.A. et al., 1997)

Molecular biology

Gene: TFAP2C maps to 20q13.2.
mRNA: size: 2.7 kb.
Protein: a 48-kDa transcription factor (binding the GCCNNNGGC motif) related to AP-2 alpha and AP-2 beta. AP-2 molecules could be involved in the overexpression of c-erbB2 in human breast cancer cells (Bosher et al., 1995).

Tumors:
- Using immunological reagents that enable specific AP-2 family members, including AP-2alpha and AP-2gamma, to be detected in human breast cancer epithelium, it was demonstrated that whereas AP-2alpha and AP-2gamma are both present in benign breast epithelia, there is a significant up-regulation of AP-2gamma expression in breast cancer specimens. An association was demonstrated between the expression of AP-2gamma and the presence of the insulin-like growth factor I receptor. Analysis of the proximal promoter of the insulin-like growth factor I receptor revealed a novel AP-2-binding site (Turner B.C. et al., 1998).
